It is now being whispered that Marvel Studios‘ forthcoming X-Men reboot will focus on three particular mutants as its main characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox, mutants have been gradually introduced into the MCU during the Multiverse Saga. However, fans are still eager to witness a live-action production that explicitly carries the X-Men label.
From my perspective as a passionate movie enthusiast, it appears that according to industry insider Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic podcast with John Rocha, Marvel Studios is planning to center their upcoming X-Men reboot around three mutants, similar to the approach they took for Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, where the cast was primarily built around Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm.
At present, there’s no known schedule or plot details for the X-Men reboot. However, it is said that Jake Schreier, director of the upcoming Thunderbolts film, will helm this project. He’ll be collaborating on a script written by Michael Lesslie, who was responsible for both the story and screenplay of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, set to release in 2023.
The 3 Core Mutant Characters Rumored for the MCU’s X-Men Reboot
Jean Grey
Jean Grey may not typically go by a superhero alias, but her power level is such that she scarcely requires one. She stands among the most potent mutants ever known. Originating from the comic books and various media, Jean is esteemed as an original X-Man and an Omega-level mutant, making her one of the most powerful figures in Marvel lore.
Besides having powers like mind-reading (telepathy) and moving objects with her mind (telekinesis), Jean possesses the unique ability to channel and shape the Phoenix Force, which gives her the power to create or demolish anything at her will. Yet, this power can make her extremely unpredictable and destructive when she fails to maintain control over it.
Although Jean hasn’t secured a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as of now, there have been whispers suggesting that ‘Twisters’ actress Daisy Edgar-Jones is being considered for the same.
Charles Xavier
Charles Xavier, more commonly known as Professor X, is another formidably potent mutant who not only possesses immense power but also shares his wisdom by overseeing Xavier’s School for Exceptional Students. Yet, being an educator doesn’t limit his ability to deliver a strong blow in combat when necessary, owing to his exceptional powers.
In terms of sheer power, I find myself in awe of this individual who possesses an almost Jean Grey-like telepathic ability. This isn’t just about reading minds or moving objects; he delves deeper, venturing into others’ subconsciousness too. Yet, what truly sets him apart is his intent. Above all else, he wields these formidable powers for the betterment of all mankind. His ultimate goal is to create a world where mutants and humans can thrive together harmoniously.
Cyclops
In terms of spiritual and educational direction, Professor X plays an essential role for the X-Men, but when it comes to leadership in combat, it is undeniably Scott Summers/Cyclops who stands out. Constantly seeking Charles’ advice, Scott consistently demonstrates his value on the battlefield, acting as both a guiding beacon for the team and a formidable fighter.
Besides his physical power and intelligence, Cyclops possesses the unique ability to emit a powerful beam of concussive energy through his eyes. This beam can incapacitate anyone who catches his gaze, making him formidable from close quarters as well as long ranges. The energy blasts inflict significant damage on almost any adversary he faces in combat.
What to Take From X-Men Reboot Cast News
It’s not surprising to many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiasts anticipating the X-Men reboot that this threesome of heroes – Professor X, Cyclops, and Jean Grey – are involved. However, their presence may signal some significant differences between the upcoming storyline and the previous Fox X-Men series.
Instead of focusing primarily on Wolverine as the main character, like Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Logan, this reboot seems to be shifting gears. While Jackman gained significant fame from his performances as the mutant, leading to more screen time within the Fox franchise, it appears that the MCU is aiming for a truer-to-comics narrative by positioning Logan in a supporting role.
Moreover, Marvel appears keen on steering clear of rehashing the Dark Phoenix saga, which was primarily depicted in Fox’s series featuring Famke Janssen as Jean Grey. While that narrative was undeniably exciting, it consistently concluded with Jean’s demise. Given her immense power even without the Phoenix Force, Marvel likely intends for Jean to continue being a part of their stories for some time.
Instead of just focusing on one aspect, it seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is striving to create an ensemble that closely resembles the original comic book lineup and narrative for the X-Men. This approach promises fans a taste of the most captivating elements from the mutant comics.
At present, there are rumblings suggesting more than a handful of actors as potential fits for roles in the MCU’s X-Men revamp, but no one has been formally chosen yet. It’s possible that Marvel may hold off on making any announcements until the Multiverse Saga nears its conclusion, but in the meantime, they are busy crafting an engaging new journey for this group of heroes.
