As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has followed Spider-Man’s adventures since his debut in the Amazing Fantasy #15 way back when, I must say that Marvel’s new animated series, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” is off to an intriguing start. The creative team behind this prequel comic has certainly shaken things up with some unexpected twists and turns that have left me eager for more.
Fans who think they’re well-versed in the origin story of Spider-Man might be in for a surprise with the new animated series, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” debuting on Disney+ in 2025. This series delves into Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man, prior to his recruitment by Tony Stark in “Captain America: Civil War.” You can expect to see a homemade Spider-Man suit and more! While it may seem like you already know everything about Spider-Man’s origin, the prequel comic of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” still manages to introduce some unexpected twists. PROCEED WITH CAUTION: The following information reveals spoilers for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1. Proceed at your own risk!
Debut of Your Local Spiderman #1
On a school trip instead of getting bitten by a radioactive spider in an open field, Peter Parker encounters one at Midtown High’s exterior, with a “CHOMP” sound effect accompanying the bite. That must have been quite the ravenous arachnid! Following the bite, Peter feels lightheaded and collapses onto the sidewalk. His Aunt May and Nico rush to his aid, leaving many unanswered questions not only about Peter but also about the mysterious spider itself.
Where did the spider that bites Spider-Man come from?
As a devoted fan, I must admit that it’s always fascinating to learn about how superheroes like Spider-Man gain their extraordinary abilities. Usually, we hear about the radioactive spider bite at a science fair and the mystery behind the radioactivity in the spider. However, in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1, it’s a bit different. The spider simply appears on Peter’s neck and bites him, leaving us wondering about its origin and the experiments that may have been conducted on it. It reminds me of the spider that bit Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
As a devoted Marvel fan, I find the portrayal of Spidey in the Cinematic Universe more centered around Peter Parker’s transformation into the web-slinging hero, rather than delving too deeply into the minutiae of his spider origin. This issue mirrors that approach perfectly, as we join forces with Peter and Nico, sneaking into Midtown High to uncover the identity behind a mysterious gas explosion.
A classic Spider-Man villain makes his MCU debut
Nico Minoru discovers the fire at Midtown High was set deliberately, and believes it’s all tied to a real estate conglomerate that wants to buy the land the school is on. She traces the owner back to the brother-in-law of Silvio Manfredi, aka the Spider-Man villain and mob boss Silvermane. Peter and Nico wind up running into some of Silvermane’s henchmen inside Midtown High when they try to cover up any evidence that would implicate them.
Peter and Nico parted ways, with Peter employing his Spiderman powers to elude Silvermane’s henchmen. Using his nimbleness to jump over them and his might to tear a section of the wall off and use it as a protective barrier against gunfire. By the end of the night, he was perched on a wall in a spiderlike pose. Later, Silvermane threatened to summon additional Spiderman adversaries, namely The Enforcers, to assist him in subduing the web-slinger.
