As a die-hard fan of Supernatural, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation as rumors swirl about the potential return of this groundbreaking series for season 16. If it indeed comes back to life, there are certain Winchesters that I believe deserve a second chance in the limelight. Sam and Dean Winchester, the two brothers at the heart of Eric Kripke’s trailblazing show, have been our companions through fifteen seasons, but let us not forget the extended Winchester family we’ve met along the way. Spanning over a decade, from 2005 to 2020, Supernatural holds the title as America’s longest-running live-action fantasy series. A return of the Winchesters would be a grand tradition, echoing through the hearts and minds of countless fans who have stood by them throughout their journey. Among these, one character in particular has left an indelible mark and deserves more time under the spotlight.
In the final episode of season 15 of Supernatural, both Sam and Dean found themselves peacefully residing in the afterlife. An ordinary but fitting turn of events saw Dean meet his end during a routine vampire hunt, while Sam managed to live a long life. Eventually, Sam too passed away and reunited with Dean, Bobby, and his parents who had already reached heaven. The future of Supernatural remains uncertain as we wait for news on whether season 16 will be produced, and if it is, which characters might reappear to continue the story. However, if Sam and Dean do return, their mother would undoubtedly be part of another season.
Mary Winchester’s (Second) Supernatural Death Was Disappointing
Mary Had Already Been Lost Once When She Died In Season 14
In the fourteenth season of Supernatural, Mary Winchester’s demise could have been more fitting. Mary was a pivotal character in the series, with the entire first season essentially centering around her death, which had profound implications. The initial episode of the season vividly portrayed her brutal demise, and throughout the season, Eric Kripke and Sera Gamble delved into the deep emotional wound this event inflicted on her family. Mary’s (first) death set John Winchester on a path of hunting, as he sought out the creature responsible for her murder. This, in turn, forced Sam and Dean to mature prematurely, and the lifestyle of hunting created a rift between them.
Surprisingly, some of the most impactful Mary Winchester episodes didn’t air until later in the series. At first glance, it might seem unpredictable, especially during seasons 1 and 2 of Supernatural, but Mary eventually made a comeback. This twist was a gripping development, both thematically and logically, as it provided Dean with an opportunity to accept her death. However, her sudden elimination at Jack’s hands in season 14 was unfortunate. Perhaps another season of Supernatural could offer a resolution to this storyline.
Mary Needs To Return Alongside Sam & Dean If Supernatural Season 16 Happens
Mary’s Arc Seemed Unresolved In Supernatural
In simpler terms, Mary Winchester was an exceptional hunter in the world of Supernatural, and her skills make her an ideal candidate for another season of the show. Although there’s no official confirmation about Season 16, if it were to happen, it would require a skilled hunter like Mary to keep the storyline compelling. Since Supernatural is essentially about “saving people, hunting things” – the Winchester family trade – any revival, be it a reboot, new season, or movie, would need someone as competent in hunting as Mary.
Some viewers found Sam and Dean’s deaths in the fifteenth season of Supernatural to be underwhelming, while others felt they were fitting for the series. After all, Sam and Dean were exceptional heroes who captivated audiences for fifteen years. Their peaceful ending seemed a pity to disrupt. Contrarily, Mary’s death in season 14 deserved a more detailed examination than what was presented.
How Mary Winchester Can Come Back (Despite Being Dead)
There’s Always A Route Back For Dead Supernatural Characters
In a hypothetical Season 16 of Supernatural, disturbing Mary and John Winchester’s peaceful afterlife could potentially disrupt their hard-earned peace and conclude their storyline neatly. However, there are plausible methods to resurrect Mary that align with the show’s narrative.
Mary Winchester might return from the dead if Supernatural decided to bring her back for Season 16 using several creative approaches. Mary found eternal rest in heaven alongside her beloved John and the father of Sam and Dean. Yet, Supernatural has demonstrated that it’s possible to return from heaven, even when souls prefer to remain there.
In line with Eric Kripke’s 5-season plan for Supernatural, it makes sense that Dean met his end in this season. During episode 16, titled “The Dark Side of the Moon,” Dean was fatally shot by Roy and Walt, only to be later discovered that he had previously died multiple times. Angels had revived him, erasing any recollection of heaven. There’s a chance that an angel could also resurrect Mary Winchester. If another danger surfaced in the Supernatural universe, it is plausible for a well-meaning angel to bring Mary back to earth once more to confront the threat.
In the series Supernatural, various characters came back from the dead, and if Mary has done it before, she could possibly do it again. Amara, also known as the Darkness, revived Mary in season 14. After absorbing into God at the end of Supernatural, God continued to reside on earth. Although his divine powers were removed, Chuck Shurley might still pose a threat if the series returns. He has shown egotism and could potentially acquire some necromantic abilities similar to his older sister in hypothetical season 16, thereby allowing Mary’s return.
