M*A*S*H Fan Favorite Loretta Swit Dies at 87

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m saddened to share that the remarkable actress Loretta Swit, famously recognized for her iconic role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the cherished TV series M*A*S*H, has departed. She was 87 years old.

Swit passed away on Friday at her residence in New York City, as confirmed by her representative Harlan Boll. He stated that her death was suspected to be due to natural causes and occurred around noon. Further details regarding the circumstances of her passing have not been disclosed. Her demise occurred three days after she posted a tribute on Instagram for fallen soldiers in real life.

Sharing an image of her character from M*A*S*H, Swit expressed, “They served, protected, and sacrificed their lives with deep love. Rest in peace. God is near.” This post came after another one by Swit, made just two days ago, where she celebrated co-star Gary Burghoff’s birthday by sharing several photos of him, some featuring the pair on set together.

Swit, born on November 4, 1937, attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before making her way onto stages by the 1960s. Her small-screen debut was in 1969, playing various roles in the iconic TV series Hawaii Five-O. This breakthrough opened doors for her to appear in hit shows such as Mission: Impossible, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza.

In 1972, she secured her breakthrough performance as Houlihan in M*A*S*H, which subsequently made her a core cast member and an immediate audience favorite. She bagged two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress due to her portrayal on the show. Swit played Houlihan until the program concluded in 1983.

Swit was previously married to actor Dennis Holahan; the pair divorced in 1995.
