Mass Effect 5 Release Date Seems Further Away Than Expected

It appears that the release of BioWare’s role-playing game, Mass Effect 5, might be delayed beyond what fans had expected. Back in 2020, the studio confirmed they were working on a new Mass Effect installment, which seemed to be a sequel to Mass Effect 3. Since then, they’ve given occasional updates about the game and its features, but have mostly focused their efforts on developing Dragon Age: The Veilguard. With over four years having passed since the initial reveal of Mass Effect 5, it doesn’t seem like the game is nearing launch anytime soon.

Mark Darrah, ex-director of BioWare, shared insights in a recent video about the studio’s future after the launch of “Dragon Age: The Veilguard.” Darrah mentioned that over the past few years, BioWare has shifted from managing several projects simultaneously to primarily focusing on a single game at a given time. Consequently, even though it was decided that “Mass Effect 5” would follow “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” there’s probably only minimal progress made so far on the new Mass Effect title.

Darrah explained that the existing situation with Mass Effect 5 doesn’t permit the entire Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s team to abruptly transition to working on that title. Consequently, a smaller workforce within BioWare will persist in defining the scale and character of Mass Effect 5, only expanding its team size when it has a clearer understanding of what the game is intended to be.

[Mass Effect 5] isn’t prepared for a sudden influx of 250-300 team members,” Darrah explained. “In the past, when BioWare focused on a single project like Anthem or The Veilguard, that project was already at full capacity and could absorb all available resources because it had an established infrastructure that could support everything.

He went on to clarify that, while there is movement of team members from Dragon Age: The Veilguard to Mass Effect 5, not everyone is joining the Mass Effect team. Some are transitioning to other areas within Electronic Arts as Mass Effect isn’t yet ready for them at this time.

According to Darrah’s statement based on his personal insights at the company, this development should benefit BioWare since they won’t have any distractions from other projects besides Mass Effect 5 in the upcoming months and years. However, the main takeaway is that Mass Effect 5 is not expected to be released anytime soon. As the project is still in its early stages of production, there’s a significant amount of work and time required before Mass Effect 5 will finally be unveiled.

At the very least, let’s hope BioWare offers some kind of update on Mass Effect 5 before the end of this year. If they do, we probably won’t get any news until “N7 Day,” which is usually around early November.
