Master the Light Bowgun: Best Tips for Monster Hunter Wilds Players

In Monster Hunter Wilds, you have the flexibility to swap your chosen weapon type whenever needed, as this choice can be adjusted along your adventure. If a weapon stops being enjoyable or effective against specific monster types, you can simply select a new one to suit your playstyle or strategy better.

In a more casual tone: Ranged weapons might not always get all the attention, but they certainly provide an enjoyable gaming experience. They’re definitely worth giving a try, especially when dealing with swarms of lesser foes. The Light Bowgun is a type of ranged weapon in the game that offers various fire modes and ammo types for a more versatile approach to combat.

Suitable Playstyle For Light Bowgun

Absolutely, both Bowguns are great for players who prefer keeping their distance from enemies, but it’s important to note that the effectiveness can vary based on the type of ammunition used. For instance, close-range ammo might necessitate getting closer to a monster, which could potentially lead to more direct combat.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Light Bowgun is quite beneficial for players seeking to leverage the entire battle arena. Particularly, if there are elevated areas available, they can ascend and temporarily avoid melee attacks from monsters, all while dishing out a decent amount of damage from a safe distance.

As a fan, I’d say, “A Light Bowgun is perfect for any full squad! Having one team member consistently dish out damage from a safe distance while others engage the monster up close can be incredibly effective, particularly when utilizing ammunition with an enduring impact, such as Poison.

Light Bowgun Fire Modes

The Light Bowgun features two distinct shooting options. In the standard firing mode, you’ll find a wider selection of ammunition types, however, each shot releases fewer projectiles compared to the other mode. Additionally, certain ammo types have a smaller magazine size in this setting, leading to more frequent reloading.

Instead of the standard fire mod, this upgraded one offers fewer ammo options but boasts a larger magazine capacity and multiple projectile launches per shot. It also allows for automatic firing when holding down the fire button, but it does have a unique cooldown period. When the weapon overheats, you must switch to the regular mode; the enhanced mode’s stamina bar gradually refills over time. Importantly, the stamina will not recover while in enhanced mode, even if no projectiles are being fired.

In simpler terms, the improved fire option comes with a unique attack called Burst Step. To execute this move, press several buttons all at once. This action will propel you smoothly towards your target while unleashing a series of projectiles.

  • Hold down L2 and press L3 Up+R2+X / Hold down LT and press LS Up+RT+A / Hold down RMB and press W+LMB+Space

Using Spread Ammo helps you reach the optimal range of your projectiles swiftly.

In addition to the two firing options mentioned earlier, there’s an extra exceptional firing method that manifests as a series of moves. This unique method uses a special, explosive ammunition type. No matter which fire mode your weapon is set to, aim down sights by holding L2/LT/RMB, and then press and hold R1/RB/Shift to load the Light Bowgun. Letting go of the charge button will unleash a powerful explosive projectile that pushes back the hunter.

Additionally, one more technique for the Light Bowgun is setting an explosive trap on the ground. By pressing the Triangle and Circle keys or Y and B keys simultaneously (or R and F keys on a different controller layout), you can position a trap near your character’s feet. When a monster steps on it or you fire at the trap, the explosion occurs, dealing substantial area-of-effect damage to surrounding enemies. However, if you step over the trap yourself, it will not detonate.

Shooting Effectively With Light Bowgun

To accurately hit targets with a bowgun, players must engage the Aim Down Sights (ADS) mode, but that’s just the beginning. Each bullet type has a specific range where it performs optimally. When the player reaches this effective range, an orange outline around the crosshair signals the ideal distance to take aim at the target. This not only ensures maximum damage, but also depends on which part of the monster the shot connects with.

Firing without aiming down sights (ADS) will never match the force and damage of aimed shots. Moreover, activating ADS mode is crucial for executing certain unique move sets.

Light Bowgun Ammo Types

The Light Bowgun offers several types of ammunition for each of its firing options. Here’s where you can explore the unique features of each ammo type:

  • Normal Ammo: Fires multiple shots with each pull of the trigger. (Infinite reserve ammo)
  • Pierece Ammo: Armor-piercing ammo that can deal multiple hits depending on the monster. (Infinite reserve ammo)
  • Spread Ammo: Almost equal to shotgun pellets. Deals powerful damage but is only effective within a short range. (Infinite reserve ammo)
  • Poison Ammo: Inflicts Poison. Some monsters require multiple shots to eventually take the poison status effect. (Limited reserve ammo)
  • Thunder Ammo: Deals electrical damage. Strong against monsters that are vulnerable to thunder. (Limited reserve ammo)
  • Recover Ammo: Produces a healing cloud where the projectile lands. Restoring health to any hunter inside the cloud. (Limited reserve ammo)
  • Demon Ammo: Produces a buff cloud that strengthens the attack of any hunter that touches the cloud. (Limited reserve ammo)
  • Tranq Ammo: Used to capture monsters ensnared in traps. (Limited reserve ammo)
  • Flaming Ammo: Deals fire damage. Strong against monsters that are vulnerable to fire. (Limited reserve ammo)
  • Water Ammo: Deals water damage. Strong against monsters that are vulnerable to water. (Limited reserve ammo)
  • Freeze Ammo: Deals ice damage. Strong against monsters that are vulnerable to ice. (Limited reserve ammo)

It’s important to mention that the game characters can buy ammunition from vendors. Specifically, Jack is one of those vendors stationed at the initial camp in Monster Hunter Wilds. Although he doesn’t carry every kind of ammunition, players can purchase Thunder, Water, Flaming, Freeze, and Poison ammo from him.

To buy goods from Jack, you should finish the “Village of the Whispering Winds” mission initially. This is the primary main story quest that becomes accessible after setting up camp, where the character (hunter) and Alma venture out to gather resources outside the camp. Upon their return to the camp, Jack will appear on your map and be prepared to trade with you.
