Mathew Horne looks ahead to life after Gavin & Stacey

As a devoted fan of Mathew Horne since his days as Gavin Shipman, I can confidently say that this man is destined for great things beyond Barry Island. His passion for theater and slapstick comedy is evident, and seeing him share the stage with none other than Sigourney Weaver in The Tempest is a dream come true.

As the final episode of Gavin & Stacey approaches within a week, curious fans might ponder about the future paths that the cherished cast members will take after the journey to Barry Island concludes forever.

The clarity seems to be growing for Matthew Horne, everyone’s beloved figure from Essex, regarding his future plans.

In the current run, I’m privileged to be a part of Jamie Lloyd’s West End production of The Tempest. Looking ahead, my ambition is to tackle one play each year moving forward.

I’m eager to perform in a play annually, while also continuing to learn and develop my skills. It’s beneficial to maintain diversity and explore different aspects by trying out various roles.

Sharing the spotlight with the reigning monarch of science fiction, Sigourney Weaver, Horne assumes the role of Trinculo, the royal fool.

In his explanation, Horne shared that he was especially drawn to the comedic physical humor or the slapstick aspects of it, as he grew up admiring comedians like Laurel and Hardy.

He mentioned, “Ever since I was a child, I’ve taken pleasure in slapstick comedy and as I grew older into my teenage years, I even tried stand-up. It’s something I’ve always appreciated and identified with, but sometimes TV isn’t the best medium for that kind of humor.

It’s wonderful to receive an invitation to delve back into the world of physical comedy, as this is where my professional journey began. And, let’s hope it turns out to be amusing!

Instead of directly asking Horne about managing these grand productions and the festive season, we inquired how he handled juggling these significant projects, especially during the holiday season.

He stated: ‘I feel a little pressure, but it doesn’t seem like everyone is focusing solely on me. Instead, I’m simply contributing as one component within two collaborative teams that create content people enjoy.’

He went on saying, “It’s fantastic being involved in things that genuinely excite people, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be present as this amazing transformation unfolds.

Although Ruth Jones definitively stated “we won’t return,” it’s likely that we’ll still witness numerous projects from Horne in the upcoming years.
