Matrix 4 Turned Down Laurence Fishburne’s Return Offer (What About Matrix 5?)

Laurence Fishburne shared during an interview on “The View” that he had proposed reprising his role as Morpheus in “The Matrix Resurrections”, but the filmmakers declined his offer. However, he left the door open for a potential return in a fifth installment of the franchise if the script and creative team appeal to him.

The decision may vary based on the situation, the people involved, and the quality of the script. If they propose a role to me, Fishburne stated, “I’ve made my services available for the fourth Matrix, but it wasn’t warmly received. I didn’t shy away from expressing my interest, I did, but for some reason, that opportunity didn’t materialize.

In the original Matrix trilogy, spanning from 1999 to 2003, Laurence Fishburne embodied Morpheus in every episode. For the fourth installment, “Resurrections,” Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took on a distinct portrayal of the character instead. The switch was justified within the storyline by introducing a new version of Morpheus – a hybrid program resulting from the fusion of Morpheus and Agent Smith – created by Neo. “Resurrections” subtly implies that the authentic Morpheus may have perished during the 60-year time leap between “The Matrix Revolutions” and “Resurrections.

Right now, a new Matrix film is being worked on, with Drew Goddard assigned for both scriptwriting and direction duties. As of now, a release date hasn’t been set, and no actors have been cast yet.

Laurence Fishburne didn’t delve deeply into the circumstances surrounding the production of “The Matrix Resurrections,” leaving us in the dark about who might have rejected his proposal, and why. It’s worth noting that Morpheus is confirmed dead in the online game version of “The Matrix,” and it’s possible that the filmmakers chose to adhere to this ending while taking a different path for the movie. Interestingly, Trinity dies in “The Matrix Revolutions” but Carrie-Anne Moss reappears as the character in “Resurrections.” Given that the machines revived and reintegrated Trinity into a new Matrix, it’s plausible that if the creative team had desired, they could have manipulated Morpheus’ death to bring Laurence Fishburne back. However, the way the character was reimagined, combining aspects of Morpheus and Agent Smith, might have made it more fitting for a new actor to embody this revised version.

Following his involvement in the ‘Resurrections’ project, it’s not surprising that Fishburne isn’t actively pushing for a role in ‘The Matrix 5’. However, it’s reassuring that he’d consider returning if the circumstances are right. This suggests that fans could expect something innovative and captivating from director Goddard, should Fishburne return as Morpheus. It would be disappointing if Morpheus was merely inserted into the script without a compelling purpose. If Fishburne decides to reprise his role after an absence of over 20 years, it ought to be for something substantial and worthwhile.
