Matt Reeves Reveals If Robert Pattinson’s Batman Appears in The Penguin Series

“As a lifelong Batman fan who’s seen every incarnation from Adam West to Ben Affleck, I must say that Robert Pattinson’s portrayal in ‘The Batman’ has left an indelible mark on me. The man truly embodies the darkness and brooding intensity of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Now, with Matt Reeves’ upcoming HBO series The Penguin, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation tinged with a touch of melancholy – after all, Batman won’t be making an appearance, but the Dark Knight’s presence will certainly linger.

In the 2022 film “The Batman”, played by Robert Pattinson, we find him patrolling the dark corners of Gotham City. He admits, “This is a vast city, and I can’t be everywhere.” However, the villains are unaware of his whereabouts. The HBO limited series “The Penguin”, set post-movie and following the demise of crime lord Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), continues the saga of Gotham City. Although Batman, portrayed by Pattinson, won’t feature in this spinoff, his influence will be tangible as Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) ascends the criminal underworld hierarchy of Gotham.

In an interview with Total Film, Reeves clarified his role as a perspective-driven filmmaker. For instance, when working on a Batman narrative, the focus is primarily on both Batman and Bruce Wayne. This format allows for a deeper exploration of the villainous rogues gallery, something that wouldn’t be feasible in a single movie. However, Batman will only be felt as a presence within this series, not making a physical appearance.

Director Matt Reeves clarified that Robert Pattinson will not portray Bruce Wayne in the show, explaining, “Rob isn’t part of the series. I think it’s better to be transparent now. We’ve discussed everything related to this, but we decided the best approach is to embark on an extensive exploration of a character seizing power at this specific moment.

In a power struggle, Penguin finds himself at odds with Falcone’s family: Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone (from Fargo) and Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Additionally, they will face off against Salvatore Maroni, portrayed by Clancy Brown from John Wick: Chapter 4. The events of this eight-episode series will set the stage for The Batman Part II, a movie directed by Matt Reeves and scheduled to hit theaters in 2026.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, it was revealed that the sequel to “The Batman” will directly continue from where the series left off. Notably, Colin Farrell will return as Oz alongside Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman. Furthermore, details within “The Penguin” character tie explicitly into how the next movie unfolds, with Oz’s entry into that world marking a seamless transition back to Batman, who is engaged in another case at the story’s beginning.

The series ‘The Penguin’ makes its debut on Thursday, September 19th, exclusively on HBO and Max. Starting from September 29th, it will air every Sunday on HBO.
