Matt Smith: “People that attack Doctor Who blow my mind”

As a long-time fan of Doctor Who who grew up watching the timeless adventures of this enigmatic alien, I can only echo Matt Smith‘s sentiments. The sheer audacity of those who attack such an iconic and universally loved show on culture war grounds leaves me utterly baffled. To reduce the Doctor Who to a mere pawn in their ideological battles is not only shortsighted but also downright absurd.

Matt Smith has expressed confusion towards those who “attack” Doctor Who on culture war grounds.

In my perspective as a film critic, I’ve been captivated by the stellar performance of the lead actor in BBC’s enduring sci-fi series from 2010 to 2014. However, as the story progressed, it was time for another brilliant actor, Peter Capaldi, who took on the role of the Twelfth Doctor, to step into the limelight and continue the epic saga.

Since that time, the show has gone through another two creative phases, with the most recent one being helmed by returning showrunner Russell T Davies and actor Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Fifteenth Doctor.

Since it was announced that he would be the first Black actor to play the role, Gatwa has encountered racist criticism. Additionally, some viewers have expressed disapproval towards the series due to its portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes.

During a conversation with The Times, Smith expressed his puzzlement as to why some individuals have opted for such hostile approaches regarding the program.

He stated, “Those discussions push it into a realm that it isn’t meant for.” He found it astonishing when people criticized Doctor Who. After all, it’s about a fascinating alien voyaging across the cosmos to save various civilizations – how can one not appreciate it?”

Although Smith is now starring in the popular spinoff series, House of the Dragon from Game of Thrones, and seldom watches Doctor Who anymore, he looks back with nostalgia on that pivotal role that significantly boosted his career.

He reminisced, “No one recognized me, then all of a sudden, I became Doctor Who. I take great pride in having been part of that show.”

“This show significantly impacted me as it’s enjoyed by a wide range of ages – from a nine-year-old to a 83-year-old grandma, spanning three generations. At Christmas time, we share this experience in people’s homes. Carrying such a responsibility is truly remarkable.”

As a dedicated movie critic, I was thrilled to witness Doctor Who’s long-awaited Christmas special in 2023, titled “The Church on Ruby Road.” In the coming months, this legendary series is set to grace our screens once more with Steven Moffat’s eagerly anticipated episode, “Joy to the World.” Can’t wait!

In the upcoming episode, it’s been announced that Gatwa will take on a role, while Millie Gibson’s character from Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan, replaces the companion who sadly bid farewell to the TARDIS at the end of season 14 finale titled Empire of Death.
