Matt Smith Wishes He Could Return to Doctor Who 15 Years Later

As reported by Steven Moffat, the former showrunner, Matt Smith, who played Doctor Who, continues to express a desire to reprise his legendary character, the Doctor.

In the wake of the phenomenal success of episodes like The Empty Child, Blink, and Silence in the Library, I stepped into the writer’s chair for Doctor Who during its fifth revival season. This is where Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor was introduced, along with Karen Gillan as his companion, Amy Pond.

Both Smith and Gillan have achieved global fame, with Smith appearing on HBO’s House of the Dragon currently, and Gillan making a mark in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series as well as the Jumanji movies starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Despite the passage of 15 years since his initial appearance, Smith expressed to Moffat that he continues to dream about going back to the filming location.

In a moment from the fresh Doctor Who: Unleashed series, commemorating twenty years of revived Doctor Who, Moffat shares with the audience: “Today marks the 15-year anniversary since the 11th Doctor landed on Earth and had fish custard for dinner.

He continued, “I texted Matt this morning that it’s been 15 years, to which he replied, ‘If only I were on that set right now.’ Get it, Matt? So, you shouldn’t go away.

Unfortunately, in the 2013 Christmas special titled “The Time of the Doctor,” Smith indeed carried out his Eleventh Doctor’s regeneration into Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor. However, since then, the actor has only expressed favorable remarks about his time in the role.

In March 2022, during Sony’s Morbius press tour, Smith expressed enthusiasm about potentially reprising his role as The Doctor, stating that it would be “the dream role” and “an essential part of the bigger picture”.

Towards the end of that year, Smith looked back and said: “It was incredibly fortunate for me to collaborate with exceptionally talented individuals such as Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, and Jenna Coleman. Our camaraderie was exceptional, and we thoroughly enjoyed creating that series.

I’m still incredibly honored, even to this point in time, to be associated with such a realm. Just like working on ‘House of the Dragon’, it brings along immense responsibility and stress, yet the satisfaction derived from it is immense.

In other words, he admitted that suddenly gaining instant fame when he got the part of the Doctor left him feeling a bit bewildered, since it meant having to adapt to being recognized in public following decades of living relatively unknown.

It’s possible that the upcoming Doctor might be Billie Piper, who made an appearance at the conclusion of the season 15 finale during the regeneration scene, but some spectators are speculating that her sudden reappearance could hint at something completely different.
