Matthew and Johnny, aged 31, were cycling on a rural road approximately at 8 p.m., when they were struck from behind by a Jeep Grand Cherokee trying to overtake another vehicle, as stated by Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron of the New Jersey State Police to TopMob News.
In this situation, it appears that the driver of a jeep, specifically 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins, is believed to have been intoxicated during the incident, as stated by the authorities. Higgins has been accused and charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
TopMob News attempted to get a response from Higgins’ legal representative, but have yet to receive one. At his court appearance on August 30th, Higgins stated his intention to hire a private lawyer instead of continuing with a public defender, according to NBC News.
Matthew and Madeline had been a couple for eleven years until his death. They began dating in February 2013, around the time when Matthew was playing hockey at Boston College with Johnny. Johnny later got drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2014 and by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022.
On July 17, 2021, the couple exchanged wedding vows, and about two months later, on September 4, 2021, Johnny also married his wife, Meredith Gaudreau.
In September 2022, Johnny and Meredith joyously ushered their first child into the world, a baby girl they named Noa Harper. This year, they expanded their family even further, as Meredith delivered their son, Johnny Edward, in February, making them proud parents of two.
After the unfortunate demise of the Gaudreau brothers, their uncle, Jim Gaudreau, issued a statement on behalf of the grieving family, expressing their sorrow over the loss of “two exceptional individuals”.
He expressed on Facebook that we’d like to make it clear to all that we’re taking in your loving messages and expressions of support. We’re deeply grateful for your ongoing thoughts and prayers. At the same time, we kindly request your continued understanding and respect as we navigate through this challenging phase filled with grief.
