It’s unlikely that George Lucas and his team foresaw the significant influence Darth Maul would have when he debuted in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Initially just a tool for Palpatine, Maul resurfaced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, embarking on a years-long quest for revenge. Over time, Maul has become such an integral part of the Star Wars universe that he’s now receiving his own animated series titled Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. This upcoming show will primarily focus on Maul’s criminal empire, but it also holds potential to deliver a highly anticipated clash between dark side characters on screen.
Maul has fought some intense battles, going up against figures such as Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Emperor Palpatine, and Ahsoka Tano. Even though he doesn’t always emerge victorious, he never shies away from a fight, especially when there’s something significant at stake. However, there’s one individual Maul hasn’t encountered in combat yet, someone he still harbors a deep resentment towards.
Maul Wanted to Throw Down With Anakin Skywalker
For the first time, Maul encounters Anakin Skywalker in “The Phantom Menace”. Initially, Maul doesn’t regard him highly because he is sent to eliminate Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn. However, following Maul’s supposed demise on Naboo, Darth Sidious develops an interest in Anakin and hatches a plot to turn him into his apprentice. When Maul reappears during the Clone Wars, he discovers Palpatine’s intentions and sets about devising his own strategy.
The climax of The Clone Wars series arrives with Maul unveiling his mastermind role in the Mandalore conflict, intending to eliminate Anakin Skywalker – a move partly fueled by envy. While Palpatine’s ascension to Emperor is his primary concern, Maul resents being dismissed and replaced by Anakin. Regrettably, it’s not Anakin who goes to Mandalore, and Maul fails to persuade Ahsoka Tano to betray her mentor and friend. As a result, Maul gets captured but manages an escape with the help of the turmoil from Order 66. The story in Shadow Lord continues promptly after this event, and it’s safe to assume that Maul’s feelings towards Anakin remain unchanged.
Maul & Darth Vader Can Finally Come to Blows in Shadow Lord
In the story “Shadow Lord“, it’s plausible that Maul’s desire for vengeance might lead him to target Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. This task won’t be a walk in the park, given the Inquisitors are growing stronger, but underestimate Maul’s determination at your own risk. His self-assurance seldom falters, and if he believed he could defeat Anakin Skywalker at his peak, he likely thinks he can match Darth Vader as well.
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I’ve always wondered if Palpatine discovers Maul’s criminal activities in the underworld and sends his apprentice, Darth Vader, to eliminate him, or perhaps Maul decides to confront Vader on his own terms. Given that before the Rebels era, Maul develops an intense fascination with Sith relics, particularly those he believes will grant him an edge against the Sith, the story of Shadow Lord could delve into this, showcasing a clash between Maul and Vader. This confrontation might reveal to Maul that he’s no match for the Sith Lords on his own.
In addition, there’s room for interpretation within the Star Wars lore that makes this scenario plausible. When Maul reappears in the animated series Rebels, he seeks a Sith holocron on Malachor and enlists Ezra Bridger’s aid. Things go smoothly until the Inquisitors and Vader arrive. The Inquisitors aren’t much trouble, but Maul doesn’t engage Vader alone. Instead, he warns Ezra’s companions, including Ahsoka Tano, that defeating the Sith Lord requires all of them. This suggests that Maul acknowledges Vader’s power, and while it’s an option that he’s simply kept tabs on his old enemy’s exploits, it’s more intriguing to imagine that Maul has already faced off against his former master’s new apprentice in the past.
