Over the last few years, there’s been a lot of overlap between comic books and tabletop games. However, The Last Session stands out as an exceptionally enjoyable blend of both worlds. Maverick and Papercutz are set to launch The Last Session, Vol 1: Roll For Initiative on June 3rd. Once you get hooked (which is highly likely), you’ll have the chance to add The Last Session, Vol 2: Rerolled to your collection in October. If you didn’t catch the Dice & Deathtraps adventure initially, you can take a sneak peek at an exclusive preview below to understand why fans fell head over heels for this endearing group right from the start.
As a passionate admirer, I’d like to highlight that “The Last Session” is skillfully brought to life by the dynamic trio: writer Jasmine Walls, artist Dozerdraws, and letterer Micah Myers. This captivating story revolves around a gaming group who bonded over dice rolls in high school. That’s me (the reader) and Jay, Lana, Drew, Walter, and Shen – a tight-knit crew who’ve miraculously kept their weekly game going through life’s unexpected twists. Before long, we delve into the lives of their characters within the Dice & Deathtraps universe.
Initially, we encounter the Dragonkin Bard Kezz as she navigates into the ruins, a journey not undertaken willingly. Subsequently, we follow Omen Shadowblade (a Human Hellknight cleric), Hazel Thornweaver (Dwarven Druid), Greg (Half-Orc Ranger), and Na’Ala Whisperwind (Half-Elf Rogue). In due course, Kezz crosses paths with the rest of the band in the ruins, quickly finding her place among them.
Regarding Volume 2, it will offer a fresh narrative and introduce a brand-new set of characters that Jasmine Walls hopes fans will become just as fond of as they were with the initial group. “It’s been truly exciting to witness the excitement for The Last Session, and I’m thrilled to carry on this journey in this new installment,” said writer Jasmine Walls. “We’ve got a revamped structure and an entirely fresh team that I hope resonates with readers as much as the first. Knowing that many people read volume 1 and truly connected with our characters means a great deal to me. At their heart, tabletop roleplay games are all about collaborative storytelling–much like comic books!–and I hope our stories continue to motivate people to craft something new together.
Artist Dozerdraws expressed his enthusiasm about “The Last Session,” stating it’s an engaging and emotional comic that beautifully encapsulates the humor, challenges, and camaraderie of tabletop gaming, whether in reality or in-game. He is elated over the first book’s upcoming re-release in a compact, convenient format and equally delighted about the arrival of a second volume, brimming with a fresh narrative and new characters. Working with Jasmine once more was a delightful experience for him, and he eagerly anticipates fans forming bonds with the new characters as they did with the original Volume 1 group.
Lauren Hitzhusen, Senior Editor at Maverick, is thrilled that The Last Session will now be part of their roster! Although it was initially published before the Maverick imprint was established, its elements align perfectly with what Maverick and YA literature stand for. It’s a tale about a group of friends engaging in a beloved game while dealing with real-life challenges, both within their tabletop roleplaying game and their personal lives,” said Hitzhusen. “The Last Session has long been considered an unofficial part of the Maverick lineup, thanks to its diverse young adult characters, illustrations by DozerDraws (a Maverick artist), and captivating interpersonal stories. I’m delighted that it can now officially join the family! This new edition comes with a special epilogue exclusive to the Maverick edition, as well as custom-made character sheets and notepaper so you can play tabletop roleplaying games with your friends!
In case you’re wondering, “The Last Session, Volume 1: Roll For Initiative” can be purchased in a convenient trade paperback format starting June 3rd. On October 7th, you’ll also have the chance to get your hands on “The Last Session, Volume 2: Rerolled.” Here’s a glimpse of what Volume 1 is all about.
If you’re fond of Critical Role and Dungeons & Draggers, check out this reissued young adult comic book series! It follows a group of pals as they navigate challenges during their tabletop gaming sessions. But things get interesting when one player invites his girlfriend to the final game night.
Initially, Jay, Lana, Drew, Walter, and Shen used to play Dice & Deathtraps during their high school years. As they navigate through college and life’s complexities, this weekly game has remained a comforting constant for them. However, with the impending graduation and the sense that each of their lives is heading in a distinct direction, Lana is excited to finally conclude the unfinished original campaign. But when Jay’s partner Cassandra enters the game, Lana is determined not to let her lack of experience spoil the best part of her week. Yet, this determination might ultimately prove detrimental to Lana and the party as a whole.
