- Apple’s latest update brings ChatGPT integration to Apple Intelligence.
- OpenAI’s services, including ChatGPT and Sora suffered a global outage.
- It been restored, but users flooded social media with hilarious memes.
As a researcher with years of experience in the AI and tech industry, I have to admit that the recent global outage of OpenAI’s services, including ChatGPT, was a fascinating spectacle to observe. While it’s not uncommon for tech giants to encounter such issues, the scale at which this happened was quite unprecedented.
Over the past week, OpenAI has kept quite a full workload with its “OpenAI’s 12 days of shipmas.” Notably, they have released several updates, ranging from major ones to minor ones. Among these releases was the introduction of a new subscription tier for ChatGPT, called ChatGPT Pro, priced at $200. This new tier offers unlimited access to OpenAI’s models like o1, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice mode. Additionally, OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model has been made available to a wider audience.
In a recent update (iOS 18.2), Apple integrated ChatGPT into their Apple Intelligence technology. This new version offers various AI-driven features like Image Playground, Genmoji, and others. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, OpenAI has been unable to provide global access to ChatGPT and its functionalities, as well as affecting other services such as the API and Sora.
The AI company admitted to the downtime, stating they’d found the problem and were working to resolve it. A while later, they announced that the troubled services were back up and running.
Today, our services including ChatGPT, API, and Sora experienced some downtime, but we are pleased to confirm that they have been successfully restored. Here’s the update: https://t.co/OKiQYp3tXE [Dec 12, 2024]
OpenAI’s video AI model Sora has been launched for general use following its preview phase since February. This model is capable of producing high-quality one-minute videos based on user instructions. However, upon release, it was acknowledged that it comes with significant performance issues, such as difficulties in accurately simulating complex physical scenarios and understanding precise instances of causality.
ChatGPT’s global outage caused chaos, outrage, and a bit of laughter
API was down the entire day. You say this so casually. Do you understand that APIs are for other people’s **businesses**?December 12, 2024
ChatGPT is widely recognized as one of the most used AI tools today. This widespread acceptance is likely due to OpenAI’s early commitment to AI technology, which sets them apart from competitors such as Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic in terms of development and adoption.
According to Appfigures’ report, ChatGPT is currently leading in the mobile market over Microsoft’s Copilot app. Microsoft introduced Copilot’s mobile apps for Android and iOS towards the end of last year, offering free access to OpenAI’s GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 technologies for image generation. Despite this, ChatGPT has managed to maintain its income and user base, which experts believe is due to Microsoft Copilot’s lackluster promotion strategies and a quiet release.
As a tech enthusiast, I’ve noticed countless posts on social media about the recent downtime experienced by ChatGPT. It seems that its advanced features are crucial for various applications in many users’ lives. Although OpenAI has successfully brought back the affected services, including ChatGPT, the humor in the memes circulating about this incident was unparalleled.
A noteworthy point made by @time0149 about X is that integrating ChatGPT into Apple’s Intelligent Systems could potentially be linked to the widespread downtime.
“Maybe adding 25 Million iPhones today was more than the stress test simulation.
Assumption 40% of the iPhones eligible performed the iOS upgrade which links to ChatGPT.
The number of smartphones from Apple’s Intel-powered line, including the iPhone 15 Pro series and the recently launched iPhone 16, estimated to be between 62.5 and 67.5 million units in the U.S., considering they maintain their sales pace in the American market similar to past years.
Here are some hilarious memes I found on social media during the outage.

In my daily exploration of AI-related content, it’s consistently striking to see discussions about students being unjustly penalized due to allegedly utilizing AI for their assignments on platforms like social media, Reddit, or X (previously Twitter). The educators in these courses often express similar concerns, suggesting that a significant portion of the work they receive from students is created by AI.
It’s striking how, with the progress of AI, discerning truth from falsity is growing increasingly challenging. This observation was also shared by Jack Dorsey, co-founder and former CEO of Twitter.
Instead of relying on others, it’s essential to confirm information yourself. The best way to do this is by personally experiencing things and learning directly. This skill will become increasingly crucial in the coming five to ten years due to advancements in technology like deepfakes and manipulated media, making it difficult to distinguish reality from fiction.
I thought coding was dead in the water with the prevalence of AI
There has been discussion about people being worried that AI might take over their jobs. It appears that roles in banking, programming, and structural design may be some of the first to potentially face this change.
According to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman, coding as a potential career for the coming generations may not have a long lifespan. Instead, they suggest young people consider alternative career paths in fields like biology, education, manufacturing, or agriculture, as these areas might prove more sustainable.
Looking ahead approximately two years from now, there’s a possibility that the majority of developers may not be actively writing code.
Billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicts a job-free future with the progression of AI. He claims that the technology could turn jobs into a hobby for most people. While the billionaire admits the world is on the verge of the biggest technological breakthrough with AI, he has raised critical concerns, including insufficient electricity to power AI advances beyond 2025. For context, Google and Microsoft’s electricity consumption surpasses the power usage of over 100 countries.
A little competition…
On multiple occasions, competitors have seized an opportunity by promoting their services or products when their rivals experienced service disruptions, positioning themselves as superior and highly preferred options. A recent outage with ChatGPT is not an exception to this pattern. Similarly, Elon Musk has praised X’s Grok model on more than one occasion as the “most powerful AI system in existence.
@Grok 😉December 12, 2024
It appears he employed a classic tactic to advertise X’s Grok when ChatGPT experienced a worldwide downtime, as he commented “@Grok wink-wink” on OpenAI’s announcement about resuming operations, leaving millions of users without service.
