McDonald & Dodds stars address series future: “We’re not complacent”

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of detective dramas, I must say that the continuation of McDonald & Dodds is a breath of fresh air. Having binge-watched series after series, I can confidently say that this duo’s unique dynamic and intriguing storylines have managed to keep me hooked from the very first episode.

Tala Gouveia and Jason Watkins, the leads from the ITV detective series McDonald & Dodds, expressed their hopes to fans about the show’s future, stating that they aim to carry on for a while yet.

Last night, the final episode of season 4 was broadcast, where DCI Lauren McDonald (played by Gouveia) and DS Dodds (portrayed by Watkins) solved a string of murders that disrupted weddings in various locations around Bath.

“Gouveia playfully commented that 10 would be a great number [of seasons] when asked about her preference for McDonald & Dodds, indicating that everyone involved seems determined to make each season the best it can be, especially in series 4.”

“If it persists, I believe it may last for a long time while remaining fun. However, once creativity becomes routine and people assume ‘We can just churn it out’, that’s a sign it should end. Similarly, when the narratives cease.”

“If my creative spark remains, the passion persists, and the people continue to resonate with my work, I believe it has the potential for an enduring run.”

Watkins agreed that the McDonald & Dodds team are still firing on all cylinders in their fourth year of production, concluding that there’s “so much appetite” from the writers and from viewers for more mysteries.

He shared his thoughts, stating, “It’s crucial that we don’t grow complacent. We’ve been incredibly lucky to secure four series, and it seems that enthusiasm from global audiences is gradually increasing.”

It’s clear that our work resonates with people, and they seem genuinely delighted by what we provide – isn’t it your aim, after all, to bring moments of happiness, mystery, and even reflection about the world around us?

“We’re very fortunate to have that. I think.”

Although ITV hasn’t announced it yet, there’s a possibility that McDonald & Dodds could make a comeback for season 5. We’ll keep you posted with any news about this popular series as soon as we receive updates.
