McDonald’s Japan Confirms Hatsune Miku Collab for “Miku Day”

On February 19th, the official Japanese McDonald’s account (previously known as Twitter) posted a sneak peek of their upcoming anime collaboration, hinting at Hatsune Miku. The tweet read, “This year, the Shakashaka Potato will include this character!” The Shakashaka Potato is a unique offering available only in Japanese McDonald’s restaurants. On February 20th, they shared another image, revealing that it was indeed Hatsune Miku in the silhouette. The translated tweet indicates that McDonald’s and Hatsune Miku are collaborating on something related to the Shakashaka Potato. The tweet humorously assures fans that the new flavored Shakashaka Potato will not be green onion-flavored.

I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming collaboration between McDonald’s and Hatsune Miku! Although the specifics aren’t fully disclosed yet, it’s happening on a special day known as Miku Day, a celebration of all things Miku. You might be wondering why March 9th is so significant for Miku? Well, it’s a playful reference to her name in Japanese! “Mi” translates to three and “Ku” can sound like nine in Japan. Put them together, and voila, you get the date! This fun linguistic twist makes March 9th, or “3 9”, Hatsune Miku’s day.

Excitingly, this collaboration seems to be exclusive to Japan, just like their Shakashaka Potatoes. So, if you’re a Miku and McDonald’s fan living in Japan, get ready for something truly special!

Why is McDonald’s Partnering Up with Hatsune Miku?

McDonald’s, a globally renowned fast-food giant, often collaborates with various other companies to create unique offerings. For instance, they have worked with Japanese businesses to produce special merchandise like limited edition food items and toys for the Happy Meal. One notable collaboration was with Studio Khara, which resulted in exclusive Evangelion figurines for fans. Additionally, partnerships with companies such as Konami and Sanrio led to Hello Kitty plushies dressed up as Yu-Gi-Oh monsters. Most recently, they teamed up with Nintendo to provide exclusive Pokemon cards as part of the Happy Meal offerings.

I’ve been witnessing the rise of Hatsune Miku, a renowned virtual celebrity from Japan, who has made her mark globally through a voice synthesizer. She’s one of those icons that have graced numerous companies before, and now she’s teamed up with Crocs Inc. for unique themed footwear and Epic Games for featuring in their smash-hit game, Fortnite.

In the latest chapter of her collaborative journey, Miku is partnering with McDonald’s – yet another strategic move that aligns two beloved brands in Japan. Given the popularity of both entities in the country, this partnership seems like a perfect match.
