McDonald’s Teases Big Hatsune Miku Team Up

I recently noticed an intriguing teaser from the McDonald’s Japan account, formerly known as Twitter. The image teaser showcases a silhouette of Hatsune Miku, the renowned Vocaloid character with turquoise twin tails, accompanied by the text “This year’s Shakashaka Potato will star this person!” The post doesn’t reveal much else about the collaboration. In the past, McDonald’s has teamed up with popular Japanese media, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Yu-Gi-Oh!, often offering exclusive happy-meal toys inspired by anime series or creating limited-time meal options for fans. The Shakashaka Potatoes are a unique dish available only in Japanese restaurants.

Back in 2024, I discovered this delightful twist at McDonald’s – the Shakashaka Potato! It all started when customers began blending French fries with flavored powders in a bag. A simple shake of the bag would produce that catchy “Shakashaka” sound, infusing the fries with these uniquely tasty seasonings.

The flavors are inspired by traditional Japanese cuisine, such as the spicy kick of chicken-style blends. To indulge in this culinary adventure, all you need to do is add an extra 40 yen to your order for the Shakashaka Potato upgrade.

In December 2024, McDonald’s introduced a new flavor sensation – the Shakashaka Potato Happy Turn Flavor. This blend offers a delightful sweet and sour taste that’ll put a smile on your face!

What is the Hatsune Miku Collaboration with McDonald’s?

nearly as real as they come, Hatsune Miku is a virtually created singer, known as a Vocaloid produced by Crypton Future Media. Her voice comes from synthesizer software while her image is crafted using animation or CGI. Despite not being physically present, she’s earned an enormous fanbase worldwide through her live performances and music. Over time, the character has partnered with various brands like Crocs and Fortnite. A recent tweet from McDonald’s Japan hints at Hatsune Miku joining their Shakshaka Potato lineup, indicating that a new Shakshaka Potato flavor inspired by Hatsune Miku is likely in the works.

At numerous McDonald’s locations, touchscreen self-service machines are utilized for patrons. In a creative twist, an A.I. version of Hatsune Miku could potentially be integrated into these machines, creating the impression that the popular singer is serving customers their food. Another possibility is that this collaboration might involve the unveiling of unique toy meals. McDonald’s has previously released Happy Meal Toys tied to prominent Japanese pop culture, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Hello Kitty plushies. It remains uncertain whether this proposed McDonald’s and Hatsune Miku partnership will be accessible to customers outside Japan. With a strong fanbase in the United States, an upcoming animated film featuring Hatsune Miku is set to premiere in North America on April 11th.
