MCU Book Revealed in 2021 That Marvel Wanted Robert Downey Jr. for Doctor Doom Before

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement at the news that Robert Downey, Jr. will be reprising his role as Victor Von Doom in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Growing up, I fondly remember watching Downey bring Iron Man to life on the big screen, and the thought of him taking on the iconic villain role is simply mind-blowing.

At San Diego Comic Con over the weekend, Robert Downey, Jr.’s return to portray Victor Von Doom, the primary antagonist in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” was the most notable announcement. The production of these two movies, scheduled for release in May 2026 and May 2027, will feature the casts of “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” While it remains unclear which other Marvel actors will join or be absent from these films, it’s likely that more information on this topic will surface in the following months.

It seems that Marvel had previously thought about casting Downey as Doctor Doom. This information was shared by Jon Favreau in the 2021 book “The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” According to Favreau, Marvel had arranged a meeting between the two at one point.

“Before this instance, I believe I had previously met Marvel in a room setting. As a child, I was quite starstruck since I used to be an avid fan of his,” Favreau reminisced.

Over the weekend, Bennett posted a snapshot from the specified book section on Instagram, highlighting Downey’s MCU comeback with a circled quote. Have a look at it here:

As a huge fan, I can imagine that back in 2005, there were rumors swirling around that Downey might have been in the running for a role in “Fantastic Four.” Sadly, that part ended up going to Julian McMahon instead, who was known for his work on “Charmed” and “Nip/Tuck.” The movie, which featured future MCU Captain America Chris Evans, turned out to be a success. However, its follow-up didn’t resonate with viewers, causing the franchise to go into hiding for nearly a decade.

It was widely believed that “Secret Wars,” the sixth Avengers film, would draw inspiration from Jonathan Hickman’s comic rather than the 1980s version, which resembled a “Mortal Kombat” storyline. For years, fans had anticipated that Doom would emerge as the primary antagonist. There were rumors that Downey might make an appearance as an alternate version of Iron Man, but few expected their stories to converge.

Over the weekend, the Downey-as-Doom announcement drew significant attention and dominated discussions across geek internet communities, reviving conversations about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The impact of this news is yet to be seen in relation to the upcoming releases of “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts” next year. With the massive box office successes of “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” and the buzz generated at San Diego Comic-Con, there’s a renewed sense of optimism regarding Marvel Studios’ future – more so than a year ago.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters in May, 2026.
