In the process of preparing for his role as Ben Grimm in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the latest actor was aided by one of the best in the industry – Andy Serkis, famously known for his work in “The Lord of the Rings.” Serkis is a trailblazer in motion-capture acting, having portrayed Gollum, and he continues to refine this technique. During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” this week, Moss-Bachrach shared how Serkis assisted him in transforming into The Thing for “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” even though he couldn’t observe the animation during filming.
Andy Serkis, often referred to as the pioneer of motion-capture, heads The Imaginarium, a company based at Pinewood Studio where we filmed Fantastic Four. Moss-Bachrach commented on his generosity and explained that they have a special room called the ‘magic mirror’. In this room, actors wear motion capture suits with sensors, monitors are set up, and in real-time, they can see a preliminary rendering of their character, although it’s not fully realized yet. They can observe the physics of their character, such as its size.
Andy Serkis was chosen for the role of Gollum when motion-capture technology was still a fresh concept, particularly in the context of major films like “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. This groundbreaking use of motion-capture paved the way for its widespread adoption by other productions, leading many to seek Serkis’ expertise. Later on, he brought his motion-capture skills to life as King Kong and Caesar in the “Planet of the Apes” series from 2011 to 2017. He also reappeared as Gollum in “The Hobbit” trilogy and portrayed Supreme Leader Snoke in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy.
In 2011, Andy Serkis founded The Imaginarium Studios together with film producer Jonathan Cavendish. Today, Serkis has gained recognition not just as an actor but also as a director. He directed and acted in the 2018 adaptations of “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” Recently, Warner Bros. announced that Serkis will both direct and star in “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” a prequel to “Fellowship of the Ring” set to release this spring.
The exceptional CGI work primarily supports Moss-Bachrach’s performance, indicating a promising outlook for “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. Unlike traditional origin stories for Marvel’s First Family, this movie likely won’t show Grimm transforming back to his human form. Instead, it seems he’ll remain in his stone form throughout the film. The release date for “First Steps” is set for July 25, 2025.
