2024 appears to mark a resurgence for the Marvel Cinematic Universe following a few challenging years post-Avengers: Endgame. The box office triumph of Deadpool & Wolverine rekindled enthusiasm for the MCU, and the comeback of Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo brothers in forthcoming Avengers films has sparked renewed optimism among fans who had begun to lose faith. With 2025’s lineup, including Captain America: Brave New World and Fantastic Four: First Steps, shaping up to be an exciting time for MCU enthusiasts, the introduction of the X-Men promises that the MCU will regain its status as a powerhouse in the years to come.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes powerhouses like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, only one crucial Marvel team remains absent – the Defenders. Yet, it’s not the contemporary team that springs to mind with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist as its members. Rather, I’m referring to the original Defenders, a unique group of superheroes that would fit seamlessly into the MCU.
The Defenders Are Comics’ Greatest Non-Team
In 1971, The Defenders made their debut in Marvel Feature #1. Initially, the founding members of this team were Hulk, Namor, and Doctor Strange, an unusual trio compared to other teams within the Marvel Universe. Hulk and Namor had a reputation for clashing with fellow heroes just as often as they worked alongside them, while Doctor Strange was previously a solitary figure who hadn’t been part of any Marvel team. They united to confront an adversary named Yandrath, which marked the beginning of The Defenders. This group would quickly gain favor among fans and soon received their own series titled The Defenders.
In “The Defenders” #2, Doctor Strange’s girlfriend Clea joined the team, but it wasn’t until Silver Surfer came on board that the lineup was complete. The main members of this unique group were Hulk, Namor, Doctor Strange, and Silver Surfer – a collection often referred to as an “unconventional team.” Unlike other Marvel groups such as the Fantastic Four (a family), the X-Men (a classroom), or the Avengers (friends collaborating), The Defenders were nothing like them. In fact, they didn’t get along very well and were just as likely to argue with each other as they were to have harmonious moments. Over time, the team would change with new faces joining – characters familiar to Marvel Cinematic Universe fans such as Hawkeye, Valkyrie, Beast, Wasp, Red Guardian, and Luke Cage, along with lesser-known characters like Nighthawk, Son of Satan, and Gargoyle. However, the overall atmosphere remained consistent.
The Defenders suit the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) exceptionally well. For one, their group dynamics align perfectly with the MCU’s knack for witty banter and engaging character relationships. Underneath their interactions lies a simmering tension that hints at underlying violence, making it intriguing to see how the MCU will portray this aspect. Moreover, having a smaller team in the MCU is an appealing prospect, as it prevents characters from getting overshadowed or lost within larger groups – a predicament Black Widow experienced in some later MCU films. Such a compact team ensures everyone gets their moment to shine.
In this upcoming team film featuring Doctor Strange, Hulk, Namor, and Silver Surfer, there’s undeniable star power at play. The previous Doctor Strange movie raked in a billion dollars, leaving fans eager to discover the character’s next move within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Benedict Cumberbatch delivers an exceptional performance as Doctor Strange, complementing other actors superbly, making his inclusion in a compact ensemble like The Defenders ideal. Given the high demand for more Hulk-centric content and the apparent difficulties in producing solo Hulk films, The Defenders offers fans the next best alternative. Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of Hulk is yet another fan favorite, and being part of a smaller cast promises more emphasis on his character.
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Tenoch Huerta’s character Namor made a small impact but could shine in a Defenders film. Known for his complex hero-villain role in the comics, introducing Namor to the Defenders could bring out his entertaining comic book persona. Julia Garner’s upcoming Silver Surfer character has hinted at being crucial to the MCU. In the source material, Silver Surfer is bound to Earth by Galactus for a period, which the MCU could adopt, allowing her to develop into a Defender. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) possesses the necessary components to elevate its Defenders to stardom.
The Defenders Can Be Marvel’s Next Big Thing
In a unique and intriguing way, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is evolving into something extraordinary, and it seems perfect for the introduction of the Defenders. This team uniquely combines two fan-favorite yet less exploited characters, Doctor Strange and The Hulk, with two relatively new characters who have yet to fully establish themselves, Namor and Silver Surfer. The unconventional dynamic of this group seems ideally suited for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What’s great about the Defenders is their potential for further development. The Defenders were at the height of their power in the ’70s and ’80s, with the team expanding past the initial four members. Just like they did back then, the Defenders can serve as a platform to highlight lesser-known characters. Unlike the Avengers, they don’t need to be the main event. Instead, they can capitalize on their roster by offering something unique. In essence, the Defenders could become the new Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU. Utilizing the Defenders in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would benefit both underrepresented characters and viewers, providing a fresh take on superhero teams.
