In a recent development for the upcoming Marvel series titled “Vision Quest”, it’s been announced that the character E.D.I.T.H., an essential artificial intelligence from the Spider-Man: Far From Home movie, will be portrayed by Emily Hampshire instead of Dawn Michelle King. Production on the show is currently underway and it’s anticipated to air next year. In the movie, E.D.I.T.H. was created by Tony Stark to manage his superhero technology and was operated by Peter Parker. She was also referenced in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but has not appeared since then. Given that Vision Quest is expected to delve deeply into AI characters, it remains to be seen what role E.D.I.T.H. might play in the series.
The working title for an upcoming Disney+ series is “Vision Quest,” which focuses on the character Vision (portrayed by Paul Bettany) following the events of “WandaVision.” This unique android was developed using a blend of Tony Stark’s AI assistant J.A.R.V.I.S., a fragment of Ultron’s consciousness, the Mind Stone itself, and a dose of Thor’s power. Since then, other disembodied AI personalities like E.D.I.T.H. have taken over Stark’s hardware, but it remains uncertain how they react to this change.
It’s well established that the series “Vision Quest” will have James Spader returning as Ultron, and it’s reasonable to presume that this production will delve deeper than ever into the philosophical dilemmas faced by these artificial intelligence entities. Previously, Vision had regained his memories thanks to Wanda’s sorcery, but he swiftly departed, leaving her behind as he ponders over his own revival.
There’s a strong possibility that E.D.I.T.H. and similar AIs could significantly influence the introspection we’re experiencing. They might even manifest in a tangible form for the first time. In the Spider-Man films, E.D.I.T.H. communicated with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) through voiceovers, but she was confined to Tony Stark’s sunglasses, lacking autonomy and individuality. However, her control over Stark’s arsenal suggests immense potential power. Yet, it’s also plausible that E.D.I.T.H. will only serve as a contrast to entities like Vision and Ultron who have developed self-awareness.
It seems the motivation behind recasting isn’t apparent, but it’s worth mentioning that King mainly focuses on voice-overs instead of traditional acting. Most of her movie credits involve work in the editing department, suggesting she might not have wished to reprise her role for this series. If the character’s role has grown significantly here, it could have been too demanding or there may have been union rules necessitating a new actor.
Currently, “Vision Quest” is being developed, however, it’s set for a much later phase compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline. Following this, “Ironheart” will debut on Disney+ on June 24th, followed by “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” hitting theaters on July 25th. “Eyes of Wakanda” is slated for release on August 6th on Disney+, followed by “Wonder Man” in December. As for “Vision Quest,” it’s anticipated to come out in 2026, though an exact release date has not been confirmed yet.
