The latest rumor about Marvel’s casting could mark a significant milestone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by bringing an actor from Marvel Television’s ABC era into a Disney+ show for the first time. Previously, Marvel Studios collaborated with ABC on various Marvel TV series, such as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Agent Carter”. Although Marvel Studios has typically steered clear of confirming whether these shows are part of the MCU, the increasing overlap between actors from these ABC series and Marvel Studios’ films and shows suggests a growing connection between these different areas of the Marvel universe.
Among the highly anticipated Disney+ series from Marvel is Vision Quest, a show delving into the adventure of Vision (Paul Bettany) following his resurrection as White Vision. Interestingly, it’s not just Vision who is being revived in this show; according to reports from entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, James D’Arcy will reprise his role as Edwin Jarvis in Vision Quest. Known for serving as Howard Stark’s butler and an ally of Peggy Carter, Jarvis has a significant history within the MCU. Moreover, he served as the inspiration for Tony Stark’s A.I. companion JARVIS, whom the younger Stark named in honor of their mutual friend.
In the popular TV series “Agent Carter,” D’Arcy initially portrayed the character Edwin Jarvis, and he continued to star throughout both seasons. Later, he briefly returned to his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film “Avengers: Endgame,” during the Camp Lehigh scene, and then again for a voice role in the animated series “What If…?” Now, there are expectations that D’Arcy will reprise his role once more in “Vision Quest.” This would be noteworthy because it would represent the first instance of an actor who originated their role on an ABC Marvel Television show reprising that same character in a live-action MCU series on Disney+.
In the upcoming film “Vision Quest”, it’s uncertain what part D’Arcy’s character, Jarvis, might play since he has already passed away in present times. Previously, Paul Bettany voiced the initial version of JARVIS, who later gained a physical form known as Vision. There are whispers that the AI JARVIS could reappear in “Vision Quest”.
It appears that, much like Emily Hampshire and Kelly Condon are set to portray human versions of AI characters EDITH and FRIDAY, D’Arcy might be tapped for a similar role. This suggests Marvel Studios could be considering bringing back their original Jarvis actor to bring the human version of JARVIS to life.
In 2026, “Vision Quest” is among the upcoming Disney+ series and is being filmed at present. Similar to “Agatha All Along”, it unfolds as a follow-up to the storyline in “WandaVision”. The cast includes Paul Bettany reprising his role as Vision, James Spader as Ultron, T’Nia Miller playing Jacosta, and Ruaridh Mollica portraying Tucker.
Which Other ABC Marvel Actors Have Crossed Over Into the MCU?
D’Arcy isn’t the sole actor from both the ABC and Disney+ Marvel series who has transitioned roles; other cast members have also moved between these two universes.
2022 saw a striking resemblance when Anson Mount, who initially portrayed Black Bolt in ABC’s “Inhumans,” reappeared in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for a brief appearance. In this Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, the character was part of the MCU’s Illuminati group.
Multiple actors who initially played their Marvel Cinematic Universe characters on ABC shows like “Agents of SHIELD” and “Agent Carter”, have since carried these roles over to Disney+ series. For instance, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill can be seen in “Secret Invasion”, while Jaimie Alexander has featured in “What If…?” and “Loki”.
In addition to offering an opportunity for storytelling, “What If…?” has opened up a chance for several actors from ABC’s Marvel series to revisit their roles. This includes Hayley Atwell, Clark Gregg, Neal McDonough, Dominic Cooper, and Toby Jones. They are now among the few Marvel actors who have portrayed their characters in MCU movies, ABC Marvel TV shows, and MCU Disney+ series.
