It was a delight to see Tim Blake Nelson reappear in the MCU after a 17-year absence, last seen in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk.” Nelson’s character, Samuel Sterns, also known as Mr. Blue who assisted Bruce Banner in finding a cure for the Hulk, got exposed to Banner’s blood in 2008, which eventually led to his transformation into a new villain within the MCU.

In the series The Incredible Hulk, it was revealed that deformed Samuel Sterns had been compelled to share probabilities and data with Thaddeus Ross while he was imprisoned. This information eventually led to Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford, being elected President of the United States. However, this also put Ross in danger as Sterns sought revenge, using gamma radiation to transform him into the Red Hulk. As a movie critic, I must admit that the portrayal of The Leader in “Captain America: Brave New World” has sparked quite a debate due to its significant departure from the comic book version. The theory proposes that Samuel Sterns’ brain may have undergone an unprecedented expansion as a result of exposure to Bruce Banner’s blood. This growth in brain size, however, might not have been matched by the growth of his skull bone. Instead, it is suggested that General Ross ordered a surgical procedure to remove the top portion of Sterns’ skull, thereby allowing his brain to expand beyond its natural confines. I Actually Prefer The Leader’s New MCU Design

In the Marvel Comics, the Leader often has an exaggerated head with hair, but this design might have seemed too comical for the live-action MCU, potentially disrupting the serious and gritty tone of Captain America: Brave New World and its Phase 5 narrative. Instead, Marvel Studios decided to make the Leader more realistic, relatable, and visually striking, which made him more impactful in the storyline.

It seems quite plausible that Marvel Studios adjusted the design of The Leader, following the backlash against MODOK’s appearance in 2023’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” Many viewers disliked MODOK’s look, despite its faithful comic adaptation. To avoid a similar critique, it appears that Marvel Studios decided to change the design. I personally find the updated design for Samuel Sterns’ Leader in “Captain America: Brave New World” more appealing, and I eagerly anticipate Tim Blake Nelson reprising his role to cause further chaos.
