The Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading towards “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Battle of the Gods,” leaving viewers eager and full of theories on what might transpire next. Robert Downey Jr.’s anticipated reappearance in the MCU as Doctor Doom has sparked curiosity since his Comic-Con appearance in 2024, with fans trying to decipher if and how the character of Tony Stark/Iron Man will link up with the MCU’s Victor Von Doom. However, while that’s the main topic for speculation among fans, there are also smaller moments and iconic actions from the comics that fans are anticipating and hoping will be adapted for the big screen.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the groundbreaking impact of Marvel’s “Secret Wars” when it graced the comic book world in May 1984. It set the bar high for event comics, breaking sales records and indelibly shaping the Marvel Universe. Alongside DC Comics’ “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” “Secret Wars” defined the event comic that would reign supreme for years. With “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” gearing up for production, I eagerly anticipate seeing some of the most iconic moments from the original “Secret Wars” and Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 event adaptation in the MCU. To add to the excitement, we delved beyond “Secret Wars” to include any long-awaited comic scenes fans have yearned for since the X-Men and Fantastic Four re-entered the main timeline.
Continue on to discover what exciting scenes we’re looking forward to unfolding in the cinematic adaptations of “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars“.
8) Doom Rips Thanos’ Skeleton From His Body
A notable scene that caught fans’ attention as soon as Secret Wars was announced, before it was confirmed Downey would play Doctor Doom, was this potential encounter between Kang and Thanos. Initially, it was speculated that Kang might take on the role of Doctor Doom, demonstrating his power by easily defeating Thanas, the villain from Infinity War. However, since Doctor Doom is portrayed as a villain in the upcoming films, it’s now expected that this confrontation will involve a variant of Thanos. This showdown promises to highlight Doctor Doom’s power and set a specific mood for the audience. Although Thanos was defeated by the Avengers in Endgame, ripping out a version of his skeleton would undoubtedly increase the tension among viewers.
7) Hulk Lifting Mountain
In the original “Secret Wars,” Doctor Doom and his villainous crew attempt to end the conflict swiftly by crushing the hero’s Battleworld base under a towering mountain. However, they overlooked one crucial detail: the Hulk. This event, ripe for cinematic exploration, represents a defining moment in Hulk’s history that hasn’t been depicted on screen yet. If we are fortunate enough to witness Mark Ruffalo return as the Savage Hulk instead of Smart Hulk, it should undeniably be included in the film. This scene would showcase an impressive demonstration of power (and visually, it would be quite spectacular on the big screen.)
6) Doom Victorious
In the 2015 comic series Secret Wars, Doom emerged victorious, which had multiple implications. He established an apocalyptic cult comprising Black Swans to confront the incursions and the Beyonders. His triumph over the menace and appropriation of the Beyonders’ powers resulted in Battleworld, establishing the stakes for the ensuing events.
It might as well symbolize Doom’s victories during the original Secret Wars event. Not only does he swiftly assert his command over the other villains chosen for the conflict, but he also fortifies this authority by launching an assault on the heroes’ base. For a glimpse of how that scenario unfolded, take a look above.
5) A Failed Snap
2015’s “Secret Wars” features a climactic confrontation between Doom and Reed Richards, where there’s a potential reference to the Infinity Gauntlet and Thanos’ battle. After Richards and other heroes discover that Molecule Man is the real power source, they visit him before Doom steps in. Believing himself divine, Doom converses with Richards, then makes an attempt to eliminate his adversary by snapping his fingers – but this move backfires, as Molecule Man has balanced the powers for Richards and Doom to ensure fairness. This scene is noteworthy because it echoes Tony Stark’s self-sacrifice in “Endgame,” with Doom ending up on the losing side this time around.
4) Bored With Power
In this instance, we often see a consistent motif with Doctor Doom, and following the events of “Secret Wars“, there’s a scene we anticipate will appear in the afterword that resonates with his character. It makes sense for Doom to find deityhood unfulfilling, as it reflects his past conquests of the world and ultimately grows monotonous, leading to his eventual decline.
In the story of “Emperor Doom”, when Doom is crowned ruler of the world, he surprisingly implements numerous beneficial changes in the global structure, despite gaining power through the use of the Purple Man’s persuasive abilities. Eventually, he allows the Avengers to overpower him and returns to Latveria to devise future strategies.
3) Black Panther With Gauntlet
In this pivotal scene of the storyline, T’Challa, the Black Panther, squares off against Doctor Doom while he’s under siege. Simultaneously, Reed Richards uses the distraction to liberate the Molecule Man. This thrilling encounter with the Infinity Gauntlet is a spectacle not to be missed, especially for moviegoers who were touched by Downey’s final act in Avengers: Endgame.
2) Fastball Hulk Special
In 2015’s “Secret Wars”, the last incursion takes place in the initial issue of this event series. Here, the primary 616 universe is attacked by the Ultimate Universe, causing chaos among both factions and signaling the end of the Ultimate line. While the Ultimate side has stormed in with numerous Helicarriers, they seemed to have overlooked one key factor: the Hulk.
Given that the X-Men, including Colossus and Wolverine, will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, it’d be exciting to witness the Hulk transforming into a missile, launched towards the Triskelion, only to revert back to his more ferocious self. If possible, it would be even more thrilling if Wolverine were to perform the fastball special, rather than Colossus. Marvel Studios, let’s see Wolverine tossing Hulk!
1) Maybe the Black Costume?
In the upcoming movie “Brand New Day”, set before “Secret Wars”, we’ll get to see the reactions as Spider-Man receives a brand new black suit, replacing his old torn and tattered one. This happens in the comics before the concept of symbiotes was introduced. It’s an exciting prospect that this could make it into the film version, something we really hope for!
