It seems that Marvel Studios has adjusted its release schedule due to doubts about the 2027 premiere of their planned X-Men reboot. The studio made significant headway last summer on the new X-Men film, with Michael Lesslie, the writer for “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” being enlisted to write the script. More recently, following the success of his first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, “Thunderbolts,” Jake Schreier, director of “Beef,” was rumored to take charge of the mutant reboot project.
The upcoming reboot of the X-Men was set to begin filming next year, with a planned release in 2027. According to an inside source, this movie would have been slated for Marvel Studios’ unannounced November release slot following May’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
Due to a major adjustment in the release schedule, the film “Avengers: Secret Wars” has been moved from its original date to December 17, 2027. This shift could potentially cause issues for the upcoming X-Men reboot within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Given that the forthcoming Avengers movies will feature classic mutants and the rebooted superheroes are not expected until after “Secret Wars,” it seems unlikely that this movie will make it to theaters in 2027. There’s a possibility that it may be pushed back to 2028 or even later.
It was previously speculated that the X-Men reboot would premiere on November 5, 2027, initially scheduled for an unnamed Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but this has since been canceled. The studio currently only has one undisclosed release date in 2027, which is July 23; however, given that Avengers 6 is slated before this date, it’s unlikely the mutant-focused film will be released then.
As a dedicated Marvel fan, I wasn’t surprised to learn that two mystery movies slated for release on February 13, 2026, and November 6, 2026, were mysteriously absent from the MCU schedule. Given that Marvel Studios didn’t seem to have any projects ready for immediate production to secure those dates, it seems they weren’t quite ready to roll cameras just yet.
The updated MCU release calendar can be seen below:
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25, 2025
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day – July 31, 2026
- Avengers: Doomsday – December 18, 2026
- Untitled MCU Movie – July 23, 2027
- Avengers: Secret Wars – December 17, 2027
- Untitled MCU Movie – February 18, 2028
- Untitled MCU Movie – May 5, 2028
- Untitled MCU Movie – November 10, 2028
The upcoming reboot of the X-Men series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a secretive endeavor, as writer Michael Lesslie and director Jake Schreier appear to be the sole personnel confirmed thus far.
It has been mentioned that whispers about potential castings are circulating, suggesting that Julia Butters, Hunter Schafer, Cynthia Erivo, Margaret Qualley, Jake Champion, and others could be in contention for roles within the MCU’s X-Men lineup.
I Think I Know When the MCU’s X-Men Reboot Will Release
It is being speculated that Black Panther 3 will be released in February 2028, making it the initial film of Phase 7 for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following Avengers: Secret Wars. If this happens, there would still be open slots in May and November 2028 for other MCU films yet to be named.
With the writer and director for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) X-Men reboot now in place, eager fans can only cross their fingers that it will hit screens by 2028. Since whispers suggest that the MCU’s upcoming phase is dubbed as the Mutant Saga and the reboot promises to be a massive blockbuster, the highly coveted summer slot of May 5, 2028 might just be when we get introduced to the revamped X-Men.
As a passionate fan, it seems Marvel Studios is setting the stage for their fresh take on mutants, introducing no less than 18 primary X-Men characters in 2026, first appearing in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and the reboot of “X-Men ’97”.
