Mean Girls’ Lacey Chabert Details Reuniting With Lindsay Lohan

As a die-hard fan of the iconic teen comedy “Mean Girls”, I’ve always been captivated by its witty humor and relatable characters. The movie has left an indelible mark on my life, from quoting lines at every opportunity to embracing the Plastics-esque cliques in high school (though thankfully without the catty drama).

This update is so fetch.

Lacey Chabert, who starred in Mean Girls, shared insights about reconnecting with co-stars Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried for a commercial inspired by the classic teen film, which is set to air in November 2023.

Lacey, who portrayed Gretchen Wieners, expressed that it was delightful to slip back into the character’s shoes, as she shared with TopMob News. Moreover, she mentioned that it seemed as if no time had elapsed, despite the fact that around two decades have passed, which is hard to fathom.

In the new holiday movie “Hot Frosty,” now streaming on Netflix, a 42-year-old actor is featured. She expressed, “Well, spending time with Amanda and Lindsay, all of us being moms now, it’s like coming full circle. It’s a cherished moment. So to have the opportunity to revisit it was truly unique.” (For additional insights from Lacey, catch TopMob News tonight, Nov. 14 at 11 p.m.)

As for Lacey, she has a 7-year-old daughter named Julia with her partner David Nehdar. On the other hand, Amanda and her husband Thomas Sadoski are parents to Nina, who is also 7, and their son Thomas, aged 4. Lastly, Lindsay and her husband Bader Shammas became parents to a baby boy named Luai in July 2023.

As an over-the-me moon fan, I was absolutely thrilled to witness Lacey resurrect her iconic character, Gretchen, once more! On top of that, Lindsay returned to the screen, slipping back into Cady Heron’s shoes like she never left. To add fuel to the fire, Amanda breathed life into Karen Smith, making her character, grool Karen, unforgettable yet again! All of this unfolded in none other than North Shore High School – a place that holds a special place in my heart and mind forever!

It was revealed that Cady has taken up the role of the school counselor, while Gretchen’s child and their two former companions have ascended to the position of top social influencers at the school.

For Lindsay, it was an equally special homecoming.

In a statement to TopMob News, the actress from The Parent Trap expressed how wonderful it felt to be reunited after so many years. She added that it was delightful to reconnect with everyone.

One individual conspicuously missing from the scene was Rachel McAdams, renowned for her portrayal of the ultimate mean girl, Regina George. She expressed interest in not participating in the advertisement soon after it debuted.

She admitted to Variety that she hadn’t been particularly enthusiastic about making a commercial. A film project sounded fascinating, but she confessed she had no experience with commercials, and it simply didn’t seem like something she was suited for.

The 45-year-old also admitted that she didn’t realize it would be such a big get-together.

She mentioned, “I hadn’t realized everyone was participating in it,” she added. “Admittedly, the idea of reuniting with my Mean Girls crew and hanging out with the Plastics again is quite appealing, but yes, I discovered that a bit late.

During his visit to Toronto where she was shooting “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen,” director Mark Waters, who’d previously worked with Lindsay Lohan on “Freaky Friday,” posed the question if she’d be interested in joining his upcoming film. At that moment, one specific role was all she could think about.

In 2014, she shared with Entertainment Weekly that she yearned to portray Regina in a movie. Having recently played roles in Confessions and Freaky, she expressed her desire to be the popular girl on set instead of the school’s uncool girl. At 17 years old, she was eager to embody the cool character. However, it proved challenging to find an actress robust enough to match her Regina, and the massive success of Freaky Friday made it evident to those in charge that a change was required.

Back in 2014, when asked by Vulture, Sherry Lansing, who was in charge at Paramount then, shared that Lindsay had to star as the lead in “Mean Girls”. She explained that if Lindsay played the villain, it wouldn’t work because her audience wouldn’t accept it. It was Tina Fey’s task to inform Lindsay about this, and she reluctantly agreed, saying something like, “Alright, I’ll take the lead role. At least I’ll have more lines to speak.

2. Prior to replacing Lindsay Lohan from the role of Regina, director Mark Waters auditioned various actresses to play Cady against Lohan. Among these contenders was Rachel McAdams, who was 24 years old at the time.

As I recall, I witnessed her performing that particular scene, and following its conclusion, I shared with her my belief that she possessed the makings of a cinematic icon. However, I felt that the character was beyond her age. I explained to her that she wouldn’t be convincing as an ingenue. Yet, she comprehended my point, acknowledging, “I understand, I see it too.

When the search began for a new character named Regina, it turned out to be an obvious choice to cast McAdams. As she explained to EW, “Mark suggested that Cady might be a bit younger, but it seems fitting if Regina had matured at an accelerated pace.

3. Prior to McAdams securing the role of Regina, she needed to convince the director to consider her instead of another potential co-star: Amanda Seyfried. The actress from “Mamma Mia!” was a strong contender for the villainous lead initially, before she transformed into the delightfully naive Karen. As Waters reminisced, Seyfried had auditioned for Regina and delivered a remarkable performance that was distinct from Rachel’s approach. She portrayed it in a more ethereal yet somewhat terrifying manner. Although she was scarier, paradoxically, she seemed less intimidating. It was Lorne Michaels who proposed her as “the dumb girl.

He continued, “So she came in and read it and nailed it, and we got the best of both worlds.”

4. It’s hard to envision Mean Girls without the SNL veterans, Tim Meadows playing Mr. Duvall and Amy Poehler as Mrs. George, but surprisingly, Paramount had reservations. (Paraphrased)

As a devoted follower, I’d rephrase that as: “I found it peculiar that Paramount harbored some apprehension towards Saturday Night Live. You see, they had experienced disappointments with certain Saturday Night Live films that originated from Lorne Michaels. Therefore, they were hesitant to include numerous Saturday Night Live actors in Mean Girls, fearing it might give the impression of an SNL movie, which could potentially deter people from watching it.

In reference to Meadows, who appeared in the disappointing remake of “The Ladies Man” produced by Paramount, there was reportedly a significant amount of disagreement between him and the studio, as stated by Waters.

5. It was fortunate that Waters persuaded Poehler to join the project as she played a crucial role in transforming mathlete Kevin Gnapoor’s talent-show rap into reality. In truth, Fey delegated the writing of the hit song to her former Weekend Update co-host for actor Rajiv Surendra.

Water shared that she would acknowledge Amy for her contribution since Amy is more familiar with rapping. In fact, Amy taught him the techniques and even provided some dance moves and choreography for the rap performance.

6. When Paramount submitted Mean Girls to the MPAA for a rating, they initially attempted to classify it as an R-rated film, surprisingly. The studio then had to argue their case to make sure that the intended audience for the movie could indeed watch it.

In 2018, when I shared with Variety about the PG-13 movie we were making, I recollected that we had to omit quite a bit. If this film revolved around a boys’ school, I wouldn’t have had to censor phrases like “Is your cherry popped?” Instead, we opted for the more innocuous question, “Is your muffin buttered?” Not all alterations were made due to the filmmakers’ compromise, though.

Waters explained to Vulture that the boundary he set was the joke concerning the supposedly wide-set vagina. The ratings board demanded the removal of that line for a PG-13 rating. They argued this because ‘Anchorman’ had recently been given a PG-13 rating despite Ron Burgundy having an explicit scene, and we accused them of being sexist. We pointed out that even though it was a female character discussing her anatomy, there was no sexual context involved. To suggest that such dialogue would limit the audience of young girls is disrespectful to all women. Eventually, they were forced to reconsider their decision.

7. As one of her devoted admirers, I had the fortunate opportunity to inquire about the date from Lindsay Lohan – it was October 3rd! However, there were several others vying for the part Aaron Samuels played.

In a 2014 interview with Cosmopolitan, Daniel Franzese (known for his role as Damian) shared an interesting tidbit: The role was initially intended for a well-known actor, but he was dismissed during the initial script reading.

In a cautious manner, Franzese noted that another actor hadn’t bothered to shave or remove his hat during the performance. He seemed incredibly casual about it all. Franzese hesitated to reveal the actor’s identity, fearing he might feel embarrassed. However, people would frequently approach him, suggesting, “Maybe you should remove your hat.” Following a table read, that actor was let go and they contacted Jonathan Bennett instead, who apparently was their backup choice.

8. Besides what Franzese previously mentioned, he also shared this additional detail: Lindsay recently disclosed to him that James Franco was once under consideration for the part of Aaron Samuels before the actor who was eventually let go. He found it quite interesting because Bennett did an excellent job in the role, but having Franco take on the character would have been intriguing as well.

9. Although Aaron initially had someone else in mind for the role, Bennett claims he was cast due to a strong resemblance to Fey’s previous Weekend Update co-anchor, Jimmy Fallon. As he explained to Huffington Post in 2015, “She confirmed it was one hundred percent accurate.

10. According to Fey’s interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2014, she stated, “I found it simpler to use real names when writing.” An example of this is the character Glen Coco, a name derived from her older brother’s friend.

She clarified to the media outlet, “He’s a movie editor based in Los Angeles, and I suppose it must be quite challenging for him.” She continued, “I heard about a shirt available at Target that reads ‘You go, Glen Coco!’, which was rather surprising.

Characters with real-life namesakes? For instance, the character Janis, played by Lizzy Caplan, is named after the musician who was an early musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Similarly, Damian, a character portrayed by Tina Fey’s high school friend and current TV Guide writer, Damian Holbrook. Lastly, Cady, another character in the series, was named after Tina Fey’s college roommate, Cady Garey.

11. Apart from penning an outstanding screenplay for the movie, Fey also acted in Mean Girls, portraying the role of Ms. Norbury, a math teacher and Mathletes advisor. However, when it came to the mathematical terms she wrote for her character to utter, she was clueless about their meaning.

In her interview with the NYT in 2004, she shared that it was an effort on her part to challenge the notion that girls are unable to excel in math. However, she admitted that at the time, she didn’t fully grasp what she was saying. To make the math scenes in the script believable, she used lesson plans from a calculus teacher who was her friend’s boyfriend in the Bronx.

12. As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share that the movie “Mean Girls” is ingeniously molded from Rosalind Wiseman’s parenting guidebook, “Queen Bees and Wannabees: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, and Other Realities of Adolescence.” Since it lacks a traditional storyline to adapt, Tina Fey ingeniously tapped into her own high school experiences to weave a plot that mirrors Wiseman’s teachings beautifully.

The author has generally been supportive of Fey’s portrayal of her work, with one small exception. In an interview with The Atlantic in 2014, she stated emphatically, “I don’t do trust falls, I never have done trust falls, and I won’t ever do trust falls.” Upon first seeing it, she recalled saying to herself, “Tina, I don’t do that.

13. Recall the moment when Amy Poehler’s character, Mrs. George, was unaware that her pet was biting into her silicone implant? Let me explain how they managed to create that scene.

McAdams shared with EW that they attached a small hot-dog fragment to the actress’s bra. The dog was about to attack her violently, but it turned out to be quite effective. Despite the situation, she remained professional and continued with her lines while the dog was gnawing on her fake breast. An unforgettable moment, I assure you.

14. Franzese explained that an early version of the script included a scene featuring Damian, which was removed prior to filming. He shared with Cosmo magazine that this alternative ending would have shown what became of Damian after junior year, with him planning to audition for American Idol. Simon Cowell was supposedly going to criticize him as chubby, prompting Damian to rush the stage and attack him. The actor further mentioned that there were numerous changes made to the original ending, such as a scene where Ms. Norbury catches Kevin G selling ecstasy, leading to her being accused of drug trafficking, with actual drugs found in her desk when she’s investigated.

In a discussion about Janis and Damian attempting to make Kevin G admit responsibility for something, they persuade him to approach the school board. However, Kevin G fails to show up. Consequently, Damian steps forward on the podium and fabricates a story, claiming it was him to shield Miss Norbury.

15a. Just as Tina Fey once passionately declined the idea of a sequel to our beloved movie, an decision she later admitted was a regret. Back then, when discussions about the sequel were on the table, I remember her saying something like, “No!!! We shouldn’t even contemplate that!” She shared this in 2014 with Entertainment Weekly. Now, looking back, I can’t help but wonder, “Why?” However, it seems that ship has sailed as it’s clearly too late now.

In 2018, when I spoke with Variety, I expressed that perhaps it’s advantageous because we can channel all our energy into this endeavor.

She wrote the “Mean Girls” musical together with her husband Jeff Richmond (known for his work on “30 Rock”) which debuted in 2017, followed by its Broadway opening in April 2018. In that same year, it was nominated for a total of 12 Tony Awards and nine Drama Desk Awards, winning Tina Fey the award for Outstanding Book of a Musical at the Drama Desk Awards. This success served as inspiration for the upcoming “Mean Girls” musical in 2024.

Although no true sequel has been produced, a film titled “Mean Girls 2” was created in 2011, which aired on ABC Family (now Freeform). This TV movie, often considered as a sequel due to Tim Meadows reprising his role as the school’s principal, told an independent story unrelated to the original film. It didn’t receive positive reviews.
