As a game analyst, I had the privilege of being among the first to experience a sneak peek at Mecha BREAK, an upcoming free-to-play multiplayer mech game slated for launch this coming Spring. This exciting title will initially be available as a timed exclusive on Xbox consoles and PCs.
Mecha BREAK has garnered a significant following due to several rounds of beta testing, currently standing as the 8th most wished-for game on Steam at this point in time.
Last Sunday saw the launch of another open beta for the novel PvPvE game mode called Mashmak. The beta managed to attract an impressive 317,522 players simultaneously at its peak, surpassing Marvel Rivals momentarily to become the fourth most-played title on Steam.
That’s pretty damn impressive.
In my practical session, I got the opportunity to explore the game’s three variations: 3v3, 6v6, and Mashmak, and I had the exciting experience of playing alongside Kris Kwok, the CEO of Amazing Seasun Games and the Executive Producer of Mecha BREAK.
Among the numerous mech games available such as Armored Core and Titanfall, Mecha BREAK truly distinguishes itself by offering a unique experience, setting itself apart as the exceptional gem among all mech games.
What is Mecha BREAK about anyway?
The narrative of Mecha BREAK frequently explores the survival of humans amidst a progressively dangerous Earth, a recurring element in the mech genre.
After a major disaster, an unusual mineral called Corite, a carbon-silicon compound, has been expanding across the globe. This mineral is surprisingly beneficial as an energy resource, albeit potentially harmful. Consequently, there’s intense competition among all parties for it, with everyone utilizing colossal mechs referred to as “Strikers.
Mecha BREAK offers three multiplayer modes that each revolve around collecting Corite:
- 3v3: You team up in groups of three in this PvP mode and attempt to complete objectives to get the highest points before time is up.
- 6v6: This is another PvP mode where you team up in groups of six and test your mettle against other players while trying to complete objectives. The team with the highest score at the end wins.
- Mashmak: The newest mode is a PvPvE extraction mode played on a massive 16km by 16km map (256km or 159 miles total). I was told that it would take 10 minutes to get across the whole map if I had unlimited energy. Teams work to claim extraction points while taking down hostile NPCs, fighting bosses, gathering resources, avoiding Corite storms, and defeating enemy players.
13 Strikers with different playstyles (and more on the way)
Upon the launch of Mecha BREAK, there will initially be 13 Strikers available. However, the majority of these characters must be unlocked using in-game currency that can be obtained by participating in any of the three game modes. Each Striker is tailored to suit a distinct playstyle and comes equipped with unique attacks or abilities.
As a tech-loving gamer here, let me share some insights about my favorite in-game character, Alysnes. She’s more of an agile assault unit, equipped with a versatile arsenal that includes a shield, sword, and firearm. This setup allows her to excel in both close-quarters and long-range battles.
In simpler terms, Illuminae acts as a supportive character, able to heal teammates and weaken opponents. On the other hand, Hurricane is more of a defensive powerhouse, moving at a slower pace but dealing significant damage with repeated attacks.
If you’d rather avoid direct confrontations, consider adopting the role of Aquila, a powerful marksman character.
If you’re more comfortable staying out of the thick of things, try choosing Aquila, who specializes in long-range combat as a heavy sniper.
As the match progresses, we’ll be adding new Forward players to the team, providing a wider variety of play strategies and distinctive skills to select from.
As a bystander, I’d note that each Striker possesses unique strengths and vulnerabilities to ensure fairness in multiplayer games. Therefore, it’s advisable to collaborate with teammates and select a group of Strikers for your squad that complement one another and can support each other effectively.
One significant factor behind our team’s victory in that round was undeniably the relentless healing actions of a teammate, who essentially functioned like the character Illuminae.
When I inquired about Kwok’s preferred Striker, he disclosed that he had invested countless hours with each one, developing their weaponry systems, and referred to them as “all like children” due to this close bond, implying it was impossible for him to single out a favorite. Interestingly, however, Falcon appears to be the most popular among the group based on public opinion.
Fast-paced controls and strategies that keep you coming back for more
After giving this game a good play, I completely agree with my fellow team member, Michael Hoglund, that Mecha Break has an exceptional quality about it, reminding me of a more rapid Armored Core experience.
Speaking with Kwok, he shared that he’s an ardent fan of Armored Core and has invested no less than 100 hours into the franchise. Consequently, Mecha BREAK seems reminiscent to him, yet it introduces refreshing distinctions compared to other mech games.
The Mecha BREAK team did an exceptional job in creating these mechanical beasts with a harmonious blend of strength and agility, maintaining the heavy, robust feel of a colossal tank, yet allowing for swift evasive maneuvers in any direction, provided I have sufficient energy reserves. Unlike some other games where mechs may appear sluggish or overly weightless, these Strikers possess a satisfying sense of realistic mass and agility.
This improvement gives you the sensation of commanding a formidable device capable of causing significant harm; the destructible objects scattered across the map reinforce this notion.
In a somewhat uncontrolled manner, I ended up deliberately knocking down pine trees and shattering semi-trucks, fulfilling my self-destructive urges.
The game consistently functioned flawlessly, without any hiccups, lag, or internal complexities. I was particularly impressed by the intricate physics calculations, considering how smoothly it ran even with numerous explosions, lasers, missiles, and special effects filling the screen. In terms of technology and aesthetics, the game is exceptionally well-crafted.
I found it remarkable how much thought was put into the ballistic calculations, considering the game ran flawlessly with numerous explosions, laser beams, missiles, and various effects happening simultaneously.
Could you explain to me what it’s like in the three modes? During one 6v6 match, my team and I were transported to the Cape Blanc Observatory map. Our goal was to destroy Corite extractors. To accomplish this, we needed to reach a specific location, fend off enemy fire, and stay close enough to the Corite extractors without being harmed for a sufficient amount of time to successfully dismantle them. If we were successful, our team would earn points.
Based on the role of the Striker, some players opted for ranged or close-combat attacks, others employed shields to ward off damage, and a few took down enemies from a distance using sniping tactics. It quickly became clear that teamwork is crucial for achieving success in Mecha BREAK.
In a different 6-versus-6 scenario, our team was deployed to Palmbay Harbor and assigned a twofold mission: safeguarding transportation vehicles as they advanced towards their destination while simultaneously capturing strategic locations en route. The vehicle progresses whenever one of my team members is in touch with it, but will return to its starting point if not accompanied otherwise.
As you can imagine, this led to frenetic encounters between my squad and our opponents.
The following transpired involved swift tactical moves, thoughtful positioning of shields, wise healing strategies, and occasionally, devastating outcomes. However, the gameplay consistently felt well-balanced and impartial, making every defeat feel just.

While engaged in Mashmak, I found myself descending alongside my comrades onto a sprawling 256km terrain. Our objective was primarily twofold: to annihilate NPCs and formidable bosses for the rewards they offered, all while progressing towards our extraction point.
When playing Mashmak, it’s crucial to stay focused and avoid getting too caught up in battling bosses or collecting items from NPCs, as this could lead to overlooking other players who might be attacking you.
Furthermore, Corite storms form following a period of time if specific markers on the Mashmak map are not eliminated promptly. These whirling purple clouds cause harm to your Striker, making it wise to eliminate these markers prior to them causing damage.
There’s a lot going on, but that just adds to the fun.
In the game, different strategies emerge due to the assortment of aerial support options available for players on the battlefield. These range from gliders, rockets, weapons, and various other items. Even if you are controlling a slow tank, by summoning a Glider drop, your Striker’s speed can be significantly boosted.
However, it’s important to note that airdrops aren’t exclusive for improving; they also serve vital functions in games like Mashmak. For instance, when a teammate gets knocked out in Mashmak, another player can summon a Resurrection Signal which essentially brings back the fallen comrade. Additionally, you can summon a Repair Station Signal that deploys automated repair drones to mend your team’s condition.
Knowing when to call an airdrop and what kind to request is key to playing well.
Fulfill your inner Warhammer painter and customize your Striker (and your Pilot)

Upon returning from assignments, I accumulated currency and had a chance to examine the treasures I had gathered. This allowed me to enhance my Strikers using the latest components I had just acquired. Additionally, I could buy aesthetics for my Pilot, like earrings, hats, masks, accessories, and other items.
As I observe, it’s important to mention that Mashmak offers a unique currency for its players. This means that to acquire specific cosmetic items, active engagement within the game mode is necessary.
When I enquired, I was informed that there’s no system allowing players to gain an advantage by spending money, as the items bought are strictly for aesthetic purposes.
Each Striker character has the option to be visually modified with various paint hues, patterns, and badges, provided you have enough points to acquire them. This offers an enjoyable level of customization, and I’m certain that some players will devote considerable time perfecting their Strikers’ appearance.
An amazing mech game for Xbox and PC

Absolutely, you might want to explore Mecha BREAK if you’re fond of mech games or enjoy competitive multiplayer titles. It offers a wealth of strategic elements to keep gameplay engaging, and you can select a Striker tailored to your unique playstyle. You’ll also have the chance to enhance your machines or unlock new ones, providing plenty of room for customization.
Moreover, I’m genuinely impressed by the smoothness and sophistication of the gameplay, even with numerous activities taking place concurrently. The Strikers appear visually stunning, and the special effects are top-notch.
Regardless of whether you think this game will appeal to you or not, it doesn’t hurt to give it a go because it’s free-to-play and soon available on Xbox Game Pass.

As an analyst, I had the opportunity to witness a captivating demonstration during a special event in August 2024, showcasing NVIDIA’s Advanced Collaborative Engine (ACE) and Digital Human Technologies. In this exhibition, we got a glimpse of what gaming might look like in the future. To clarify, though, this was merely a presentation of the game Mecha BREAK, not the complete experience.
