There’s been a lot of buzz about Moo Deng, a two-month-old female pygmy hippo from the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. Moo Deng’s fame isn’t limited to online platforms, as the zoo shared with the BBC that their visitor count has nearly doubled following her birthday in July. Furthermore, they expressed on Facebook (on September 8th) a message translated from Thai, “This morning, there have been many #Little Pig fan clubs since early hours.
It’s logical to infer that they are planning to put Moo Deng merchandise, such as a button-up shirt and pants, on sale – this information was shared on Facebook on the very same day.
Yet, the glory that accompanies encountering the pygmy hippo in person doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Regrettably, some visitors have shown unacceptable behavior, hurling shellfish at her and splashing water to try and wake her up. This unsavory conduct led the zoo to issue a warning.
Not only are these actions inhumane, according to Narongwit Chodchoi, the zoo director, they’re also potentially hazardous.
He said, “It’s crucial that we safeguard these creatures, providing them with a secure and cozy living space instead.
The zoo is encouraging its guests to visit Moo Deng during specific hours when she’s active, as stated on social media: “Our little #Bouncing Pig is most active in the morning from 8 AM to 9 AM, particularly after her shower. She’ll then take a nap before becoming active again at 2 PM. Come see me during these times!
At Khao Kheow Open Zoo, they take special care of Moo Deng because pygmy hippos, often referred to as dwarf hippos, are a critically endangered species. The Pygmy Hippo Foundation suggests that only around 2,000 of these unique creatures still live in the wild.
Apart from promoting understanding about her species, Moo Deng also captivates online audiences with her entertaining antics.
