Stepping into the director’s chair for a fresh BBC drama isn’t a task for the faint-hearted, and it’s Matthew Gurney, an exceptional deaf actor, who has boldly taken on the challenge as the lead in Reunion. In his own words, Daniel Brennan, the character he plays after being released from prison, is a role that stands “entirely apart” from anything he’s tackled before.
In an interview with the BBC prior to the series release, Gurney commented on his character Brennan: “Unlike typical deaf experiences as shown in past movies, Brennan’s journey is remarkably unique. Previously, deaf and disabled characters have often been portrayed in quite predictable manners.
This person is not like others, as he’s disliked by members of the deaf community. My curiosity led me to learn more about him, and my desire to make a difference prompted me to become involved.
The storyline centers around Daniel, who, upon his release from prison, embarks on a journey to set things right and uncover the truth. However, due to his shunning by the deaf community, he finds himself isolated and without companionship.
The performance is a bilingual event, utilizing both British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English. It features a variety of sign languages, including BSL and Sign Supported English (SSE), as confirmed by Gurney himself.
But who is the actor and where may you have seen him previously? Read on to find out more.
