50 years following the initial appearance of the revamped X-Men team in the 1975 comic “Giant-Size X-Men” #1, Marvel Comics is introducing a brand new group of mutants – the 3K X-Men. On Tuesday, they revealed a sneak peek at this fresh generation with a teaser for issue #16 of the X-Men comic series by Jed Mackay and Ryan Stegman, which echoes Cyclops’ Alaskan-based X-Men from last year’s relaunch, marking the start of the new “From the Ashes” era within the X-line.
See the just-released teaser below.
Mackay and Stegman’s ongoing X-Men run revealed that a shadowy organization known only as 3K has been making new mutants by force-activating X-Genes in adult flatscans (a.k.a. humans). Cassandra Nova, the telepathic twin sister of Professor Charles Xavier, has been furthering her “Great Work” with 3K, a cabal that includes “The Zealot” (Nova), “The Doctor” (Astra and her son, the Magneto clone Joseph), “The Means” (unrevealed), and “The Chairman” (the mutant terrorist The Krakoan).
The Chairman declared in X-Men #1 that they were creating a grand masterpiece, fashioning a forge where an entirely new universe would emerge. Since then, the X-Men team, established by Cyclops and Magneto post-Krakoa’s downfall, has inducted Ben Liu and Jennifer Starkey into their ranks at their manufacturing facility in Alaska.
In the first issue of X-Men, we find the Alaskan X-Men – Cyclops, Psylocke, Kid Omega, Magik, Tempest, and Juggernaut – facing off against six individuals who have suddenly developed mutant abilities due to a substance called 3K. These newcomers, referred to as “adult-onset mutants,” were being manipulated by a secretive group of agents from the Orchis Fourth School, who possess extraordinary powers such as super speed, telepathy, invulnerability, the ability to control liquids, and even the power to create a black hole.
Marvel has given us hints about these new X-Men in December’s Timeslide #1, where it teased two upcoming X-Men events: “XVX,” a seven-part crossover storyline appearing across various X-titles, and “3K Gene Bomb,” which will unfold in future issues of X-Men.
