Meet the cast of A Ghost Story for Christmas: Woman of Stone

I must say, this cast is as captivating as a summer’s day at the seaside, each actor bringing their unique charm and talent to the table.

Despite my initial apprehensions about the conclusion of the series last year, I’m thrilled to find myself immersed once more in the chilling world of Mark Gatiss’ Ghost Stories for Christmas. This season, he’s spun a fresh tale, drawing inspiration from E Nesbit’s “Man-Size in Marble.” As a devoted cinephile, I eagerly await its unveiling.

In a peaceful village setting, a Victorian duo experiences an unsettling twist in their tranquil lifestyle as they grapple with an age-old tale: the chilling belief that the effigies within the local church’s tombs will miraculously awaken on Christmas Night.

In the miniseries Woman of Stone, Éanna Hardwicke and Phoebe Horn portray the main characters Jack and Laura, respectively. Celia Imrie takes on the role of E Nesbit, who narrates the story. However, one might wonder about the other cast members and their characters in this year’s production.

A Ghost Story for Christmas: Woman of Stone cast

Below, you’ll find the principal characters and actors in the movie “A Ghost Story for Christmas: Woman of Stone.” For additional information about them and their previous roles, continue reading below.

  • Éanna Hardwicke as Jack Lorimer
  • Phoebe Horn as Laura Lorimer
  • Celia Imrie as Edith Nesbit
  • Monica Dolan as Mrs Dorman
  • Mawaan Rizwan as Dr Zubin

Éanna Hardwicke plays Jack Lorimer

Who is Jack Lorimer? – He’s a budding artist who has tied the knot with Laura not long ago. The newlyweds have moved into a cozy little cottage in a serene village, but their peaceful life is tainted by the eerie predictions of their housekeeper, Mrs Dorman.

Hardwicke has described Jack as “a bit of a dandy and not a good man”.

I found myself captivated by his free-spirited, bohemian nature – it’s ironic, perhaps we wouldn’t anticipate someone so unconventional to harbor abusive and controlling tendencies. In truth, he presents as a gentle, harmless sheep, but beneath that facade lies the cunning nature of a wolf.

There’s an allure about him, along with a performance style that appeals to certain people, but those with keen observation skills can discern its flaws. In private, however, he transforms completely. This portrayal in the writing was seen as honest and powerful.

Have I come across Éanna Hardwicke anywhere before? He is recognized for his role in last year’s BBC drama “The Sixth Commandment,” and he has also appeared in shows like “Normal People,” “Smother,” “Fate: The Winx Saga,” “The Doll Factory,” and “A Very Royal Scandal.

In terms of movies, he has been featured in Vivarium and About Joan, and will appear in William Tell next year.

Phoebe Horn plays Laura Lorimer

Laura is a writer and recently married to Jack, whose tranquil life in a peaceful town gets disturbed due to the warnings issued by Mrs. Dorman.

In her own words, she described her character as likely being a more accomplished writer than her husband suggests, perhaps to avoid feeling undermined by her constant earnings. Mark Gatiss subtly amplified the essence of Nesbit’s work by intensifying the sparse descriptions and dialogues for Laura. Her silence speaks volumes, hinting at a hidden depth of darkness.

Where have I seen Phoebe Horn? Horn has previously appeared in an episode of Call the Midwife.

Celia Imrie plays Edith Nesbit

I am familiar with the author who penned the tale “Man Size in Marable,” and that’s none other than Edith herself.

I’ve come across Celia Imrie in several films! Some of her notable roles include Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, St Trinian’s, Nanny McPhee, and Calendar Girls. She’ll be starring in an upcoming adaptation of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club next year as well.

This star has been featured in several television shows such as After You’ve Gone, Patrick Melrose, Keeping Faith, Better Things, and The Diplomat.

Monica Dolan plays Mrs Dorman

Who is Mrs. Dorman? She is the housekeeper for Jack and Laura, who shares with them a local superstition as well as the legend about the marble knight tomb effigies in the village church. According to this tale, these knights are believed to rise from their resting places on Christmas Eve.

In a similar vein, Dolan expressed her thoughts about the character she portrayed: “Indeed, it seems to me that this tale belongs to Mrs. Dorman. She’s not just cold stone; instead, she’s cautious, vigilant, and keenly perceptive. Despite her seemingly fragile exterior, I sensed a deep underlying gentleness within her. This character is remarkably empathetic towards those who are weak and in need of care.

It seems that Mr Dorman may have dominated her, leading her to be particularly attentive to signs in the interactions of those she encounters. She is talented in both cooking and storytelling, demonstrating her creativity, yet she maintains a cautious approach: there’s an undercurrent of restraint in her personality. She has been held back, but instead of openly confronting, she resists in a quiet, calculated manner. Utilizing the resources at her disposal in a hidden and indirect way, she achieves significant results.

“Mrs Dorman believes solidly in the supernatural, she sees it as something tangible, to be revered, and potentially harmful – something to be managed but undeniable. From her standpoint, those who do not take matters beyond themselves seriously do so at their peril. Mrs Dorman is damaged beyond repair and her world view is cast.”

I recognize Monica Dolan from various television series such as Wolf Hall, Vanity Fair, The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, Black Mirror, The Change, Mr Bates vs The Post Office, W1A, Inside No 9, and Sherwood. Her exceptional talent in these productions has left a lasting impression on me.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been fortunate enough to see an array of films that showcase the versatile talents of this actress. From her roles in Never Let Me Go, Sightseers, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Pride, Eye in the Sky, Cyrano, The Dig, Empire of Light, and Typist Artist Pirate King, she’s left an indelible impression on me with each captivating performance.

Mawaan Rizwan plays Dr Zubin

Who is Dr Zubin? Zubin is a local doctor who regularly visits his patient, Edith.

Rizwan commented about Zubin: “I found it intriguing that although Zubin resides in a town where many people depend on him, he frequently feels like an outsider. I believe he’s yearning for connection, and when he encounters Edith (and subsequently Laura), he sees someone who shares his spirit.

Have you come across Mawaan Rizwan in shows like Taskmaster, Juice, Vera, Next of Kin, or Two Weeks to Live? Or perhaps you’ve seen him in the 2023 Doctor Who sketch for Children in Need.
