Ellen Pompeo plays Dr Meredith Grey
What is Meredith Grey’s background? In the show “Grey’s Anatomy,” Meredith initially appeared as a eager intern and has since advanced through the ranks, now focusing her efforts on studying Alzheimer’s disease in depth.
Her past experiences, including the rollercoaster relationship and marriage to Derek, friendships at work, brushes with death, and romantic encounters since Derek’s passing, have provided numerous plotlines. However, currently she is facing a new challenge as her hidden research is about to be exposed by Catherine Fox.
In addition to her role as Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo has acted in various films such as Daredevil, Old School, and Life of the Party. Moreover, she has made appearances on TV shows including Station 19 for crossover episodes and guest-starred on Friends and RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars.
James Pickens Jr plays Dr Richard Webber
What is the background of Richard Webber? Currently, he serves as the chief medical officer for Catherine’s foundation and is also a senior general surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
He was not only a well-known former head of surgery but also faced numerous scandals and personal struggles, including alcoholism and conflicts with his ex-wife Adele. Now, he’s happily married to Catherine and is the biological father of Maggie.
In addition to his famous part on Grey’s Anatomy, James Pickens Jr has acted in various other shows. Before gaining recognition for this role, he appeared in The X-Files, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The West Wing, The Practice, Six Feet Under, Station 19, Private Practice, Yellowstone, and The Conners.
Kevin McKidd plays Dr Owen Hunt
In simpler terms, Owen Hunt is a veteran doctor introduced in the fifth season of the show. He served in Iraq and was diagnosed with PTSD afterwards. He had an on-again, off-again romantic relationship with Teddy, which ended in marriage during the eighteenth season. Owen is renowned for his expertise in trauma surgery and handling the emergency room chaos.
In addition to Trainspotting, 16 Years of Alcohol, and ITV’s Six Four, Kevin McKidd is also recognized for his acting roles in Anna Karenina, North Square, Rome, and Journeyman.
Chandra Wilson plays Dr Miranda Bailey
Miranda Bailey is a pivotal figure at the hospital, known for her strong leadership and ability to keep things running smoothly. Despite her no-nonsense demeanor, she’s also compassionate and offers support when needed. With time, she has become even more influential, currently heading the residency program at Grey Sloan Memorial. Her accomplishments include receiving the Catherine Fox award and leading a happy family life with her husband Ben and their three children.
In addition to her notable role as Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy, Chandra Wilson has appeared in other shows. She has reprised this character in the spin-offs Private Practice and Station 19. Furthermore, she has directed several episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and Good Trouble. Before joining Grey’s Anatomy, Wilson acted in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Sopranos.
Camilla Luddington plays Dr Jo Wilson
What is the background of Jo Wilson? Initially introduced as an intern in season 9, she has progressed within Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and currently holds the position of OB/GYN resident. Her past includes a marriage to Alex Karev which ended when he left her for Izzie. Presently, Jo is a proud mother to Luna, whom she adopted.
In addition to voicing Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series and appearing in “William & Kate: The Movie,” “True Blood,” and “Californication,” Camilla Luddington has also featured in other projects.
Kim Raver plays Dr Teddy Altman
What is the background of Teddy Altman? After taking over from Meredith as the chief of surgery, her future remains uncertain following her dismissal by Catherine for aiding Meredith in clandestine studies. Teddy and Owen, an old acquaintance, have since exchanged vows and are now parents to Allison and Leo.
I’ve been a fan of Kim Raver since her appearances on shows like 24, Third Watch, and Lipstick Jungle before she joined Grey’s Anatomy. Since then, I’ve enjoyed watching her in other projects such as 24: Live Another Day, Designated Survivor, and Ray Donovan.
Caterina Scorsone plays Dr Amelia Shepherd
What is Amelia Shepherd’s background? Originally brought in as a guest character and introduced as Derek’s younger sibling, Amelia has been a significant presence in Grey’s Anatomy for over ten years. Having overcome her addiction to drugs, she now holds the position of chief of neurosurgery.
In addition to Private Practice, Scorsone has acted in other shows and movies. She appeared in Power Play, Missing, Crash, and the thriller film The November Man.
Jake Borelli plays Dr Levi Schmitt
In simpler terms, who is the current chief resident named Levi Schmitt? He gained prominence in season 14 and was previously in a relationship with Nico Kim. Notably, he is the first major LGBTQ+ character since the exit of Callie and Arizona.
In addition to Grey’s Anatomy, Jake Borelli has appeared in other shows. Before joining the Grey’s cast, he was on Nickelodeon’s The Thundermans and had roles in NCIS: Los Angeles, iCarly, and Greek.
Chris Carmack plays Dr Atticus Lincoln
What is the identity of Atticus Lincoln, commonly referred to as Link? He holds the position of chief orthopaedic surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. He has a long-standing acquaintance with Jo, and they are currently involved in a romantic relationship. Previously, he was romantically linked to Amelia and shares a son, Scout, with her.
In addition to his notable roles in The OC, Nashville, Shark Night, and US TV movies, Chris Carmack has made appearances on shows such as NCIS, Desperate Housewives, and Smallville.
Debbie Allen plays Dr Catherine Fox
What is the background of Catherine Fox? She is a renowned urologist and established the Catherine Fox Foundation. In season 8, she was presented as Jackson Avery’s mother, who gained notoriety when Richard, her late husband, married her after his first wife passed away. Additionally, Catherine holds a position on Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s board and has recently been quite active in terminating employees.
In addition to her renowned parts in Fame, A Different World, In the House, and SWAT, Debbie Allen has also graced our screens in shows like Raven’s Home and Grace and Frankie.
Anthony Hill plays Dr Winston Ndugu
What is the background of Winston Ndugu? Prior to relocating from Seattle, he was married to Maggie. Currently, he holds the position of chief cardiothoracic surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
In addition to his part on Grey’s Anatomy, Anthony Hill has acted in other notable shows such as Watchmen, This Is Us, Colony, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Future Man.
Alexis Floyd plays Dr Simone Griffith
Simone Griffith is a new intern who began working with us in season 19. She’s an accomplished individual with a strong commitment to her job, but she deals with some complex personal matters. In the past, she was torn between her feelings for Lucas and her loyalty to her fiancé Trey, ultimately choosing to leave Trey at the altar.
I’ve come across Alexis Floyd’s acting work, and she’s most recognized for her part as Neff in Inventing Anna and as Tia Clayton on The Bold Type. Additionally, she has acted in Way Down, Dickinson, and The Good Fight.
Harry Shum Jr plays Dr Benson ‘Blue’ Kwan
What is Benson ‘Blue’ Kwan known for in the newest group of interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital? He has a strong competitive spirit and isn’t always the most friendly personality. Yet, he remains committed to his role, willing to bend the truth on occasion.
In addition to his film appearances in “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Shum has made significant marks on television. He gained recognition for playing key roles on shows like “Glee” and “Shadowhunters.”
Adelaide Kane plays Dr Jules Millin
As a film enthusiast, I’d describe it like this: I remember when Jules Millin made her debut at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. It was during an intern rotation, and little did I know that she would soon become the talk of the town. In a twist of events reminiscent of Meredith and Derek’s past, Jules found herself in a rather awkward situation – she had slept with Link.
In addition to her notable roles on Neighbors, Teen Wolf, and Once Upon a Time, the versatile Australian actress and model Adelaide Kane has made appearances in other shows. Some of these include This Is Us, SEAL Team, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Midori Francis plays Dr Mika Yasuda
What is the background of Mika Yasuda? Recently, she was among the new interns accepted at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Due to her financial merit, she was awarded a grant by the institution, enabling her to progress in her medical career without being burdened by heavy student loans.
In addition to her work on Dash & Lily and The Sex Lives of College Girls, Francis has appeared in several stage shows and films. Some of her notable film roles are in Ocean’s 8, Good Boys, and Unseen.
Niko Terho plays Dr Lucas Adams
What is the background of Lucas Adams? He’s the newest intern in the group and interestingly enough, is a relative of the Shepherds. More specifically, he’s Derek and Amelia’s nephew, making him connected to Meredith as well. Recently diagnosed with ADHD, Lucas has been nurturing a budding romance with Simone.
In what other productions has Niko Terho appeared, specifically on television? After making his debut on Sweetbitter, he acted alongside Jake Borelli from Grey’s Anatomy in the romantic comedy, The Thing About Harry.
Grey’s Anatomy past characters: What major cast members have left the series?
Sandra Oh as Dr Cristina Yang
Prior to gaining fame for her lead role in Killing Eve, Sandra Oh was recognized for her portrayal of Cristina Yang. Known for her determined and unyielding career focus, Cristina was a beloved character since the show’s early seasons. She placed great importance on her work until she developed romantic relationships with her superiors, Dr. Preston Burke and Dr. Owen Hunt.
Meredith considers her as her most intimate friend, having experienced significant hardships together, including a shooting and plane crash. Although she’s no longer a regular cast member on the show, she continues to be one of Meredith’s trusted confidants. Currently, she holds the positions of both the director of cardiothoracic surgery and chief medical officer at a Swiss hospital.
Katherine Heigl as Dr Izzie Stevens
Izzie was part of the main team of interns who initiated the show’s storyline. Later, she became involved in significant plots, including her relationship with patient Denny Duquette, whom she later married, as well as her personal struggle with a rare type of cancer and eventual recovery.
Izzie, known for her kind and guiding nature among her group, ended up marrying Alex. However, she was let go from Seattle Grace, leading to a complex series of events. Eventually, she made amends with Alex once again. To put it simply, Izzie’s character development did not follow a straightforward path.
Justin Chambers as Dr Alex Karev
Alex went through significant personality changes during his upbringing in foster care and later as the troubled newcomer among Meredith’s interns. His romantic involvement with Izzie ended after her connection with Denny Duquette, and he experienced numerous heart-wrenching plotlines throughout the show.
Initially intending to pursue plastic surgery, he instead excelled in pediatric surgery and advanced in his field, temporarily taking over as chief of surgery from Bailey. However, in season 16, he discovered Izzie had used their frozen embryos without his consent, causing him to reunite with her. As a result, Alex left Jo and moved to Kansas.
TR Knight as George O’Malley
As a devoted cinema goer, I can relate to George’s journey at Seattle Grace. Initially, things didn’t go smoothly for me as an intern there, but I stumbled during my exam and had to repeat the year. However, I refused to let failure define me. With renewed determination, I worked tirelessly to hone my skills. And eventually, I made a name for myself in the medical community with my innovative elevator heart surgery technique.
George developed feelings for Callie, leading them to marry. However, he had harbored affection for Izzie and even had an affair with her. Eventually, he confessed his infidelity to Callie, resulting in their brief separation. Despite this, George’s passion for becoming a trauma surgeon in the army remained strong.
Unfortunately, as George made his way home following his final day at the hospital in the fifth season’s finale, he demonstrated his bravery yet again. He selflessly jumped in front of a bus to shield another woman from harm. Tragically, despite undergoing surgery by his friends and being hospitalized, George’s injuries left him unrecognizable until it was too late, and he passed away.
Isaiah Washington as Dr Preston Burke
Previously leading cardiothoracic surgery, Preston faced personal challenges. He was wounded and acquired a tremor which hindered his surgical abilities. During this time, Cristina supported him as his fiancée, but the experience placed immense pressure on their relationship. Their romantic storyline was a significant plot point until their marriage ultimately fell apart.
I found myself in hot water when I used a hurtful slur towards the LGBTQ+ community on set. In response, I issued a statement acknowledging my mistake, admitting “I can neither justify nor explain my actions. I’ve come to accept that there are aspects of myself I must confront and examine more deeply, and I’ve reached out for guidance.”
Patrick Dempsey as Dr Derek Shepherd
In the show, Derek, who later became known as “McDreamy,” first appeared after a single night of passion between him and Meredith, unbeknownst to them both that they would eventually become colleagues at the medical center.
The early seasons of the show revolved around the complicated romance between renowned neurosurgeon Derek and Meredith, who later joined the board. Despite their bumpy relationship, they eventually adopted a daughter named Zola, and had two more kids, Ellis and Bailey.)
After enduring a tough time following the shooting of season 7 and stepping down as head of surgery, he managed to revive his career and spearhead a project on brain mapping. Tragically, Derek met his demise in a severe car accident and was taken to a hospital with insufficient staff, ill-equipped to handle his extensive wounds.
Kate Walsh as Dr Addison Montgomery
A renowned neonatal surgeon, Addison, gained further fame by headlining her own show, Private Practice. Initially appearing in Grey’s Anatomy as Derek’s former spouse, she was displeased with his budding romance with Meredith, resulting in an uncomfortable love triangle. Nevertheless, she relocated to Los Angeles to establish her own clinic, eventually starring in a successful six-season series spin-off.
Sara Ramirez as Dr Callie Torres
In the second season, Callie joined the orthopedic residency program as a senior resident. Later on, she developed a romantic relationship with George, leading them to marry.
As I watched the unfolding storyline of “Grey’s Anatomy,” I initially found myself disliking Callie, due to her rocky relationship with George’s friend circle. However, over time and with significant life changes – the arrival of a child with Mark and subsequent marriage to Arizona – Callie managed to win me, and apparently George’s friends, over. It’s fascinating to note that Callie is one of the longest-running LGBTQ+ characters on television, gracing our screens for an impressive 11 seasons thus far.
Jessica Capshaw as Dr Arizona Robbins
I once came across a vibrant and cheerful head of pediatric surgery named Arizona. She moved effortlessly through the hospital halls in her rolling sneakers, leaving a trail of positivity behind.
After the tragic plane crash in season 8 that left Arizona dealing with survivor’s guilt and the loss of her leg, her life entered a long, difficult chapter. Despite the divorce from Callie, Arizona continues to be a devoted mother to their daughter, Sofia.
Eric Dane as Dr Mark Sloan
At the hospital, Mark, who led the plastic surgery department, was famously known as a charmer among women, earning him the nickname ‘McSteamy.’ He shared a deep friendship with Derek, having grown up together like brothers. However, their bond was tested when Mark had an affair with Addison. Fortunately, they managed to reconcile afterwards.
Subsequently, he had a tumultuous love story with Lexi, who was born from Callie’s earlier relationship. Tragically, they both perished in the airplane accident. As a result of their unfortunate demise, the medical facility came to be known as Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Chyler Leigh as Dr Alexandra Caroline ‘Lexie’ Grey
In the third season, Lexie, Meredith’s half-sister, joined Seattle Grace Hospital as a surgical intern. Over time, she advanced to become a resident. Throughout the series, Lexie strived for a strong bond with Meredith and frequently helped mend the damage caused by their troubled father Thatcher.
During her hospital stay, she developed feelings for George, had a brief romance with Alex, and experienced an up-and-down connection with Mark. Sadly, both she and Mark met their ends in the devastating plane crash that occurred during season 8.
Sarah Drew as Dr April Kepner
As a movie buff, I’d put it this way: After the merger of Mercy West Hospital, a newcomer named April became one of its residents. She wasn’t everyone’s favorite due to her strong religious convictions. But under Owen’s guidance, she discovered her passion for trauma surgery. Along the way, she fell in love with Jackson and started a family with him, welcoming two beautiful children into the world.
After the passing of their firstborn son, April chose to work as a trauma surgeon in the military alongside Owen. This decision ultimately led to an unfixable disagreement between them, resulting in April and Jackson’s divorce.
At the start of the program, paramedic Matthew and April were together. Later in the storyline, they rekindled their relationship only for them to be involved in a tragic car accident. Following this incident, they parted ways, and April made the decision to move to Boston with her daughter Harriet and Jackson to manage the Catherine Fox Foundation.
Jesse Williams as Dr Jackson Avery
A man named Jackson, who grew up in Mercy West, Jackson, defied expectations from his illustrious Avery medical background, and excelled in plastic surgery under Mark Sloan’s guidance. After Mark’s passing, Jackson rose to become the head of the department. He later married April and endured the heartache of losing their first child, only to be surprised with a second unexpected blessing.
In the show, Jackson and his ex-wife, Divorce, have a relationship that ends in season 16. Later, Jackson decides he wants to focus on running his family’s foundation in Boston. Therefore, he leaves with April and their child.
Kelly McCreary as Dr Maggie Pierce
Born into a prominent medical family, Maggie is the daughter of Richard and Ellis Grey. As a result, she is the sister by half to Meredith.
In the tenth season, Maggie emerged as a unique character contrasting Meredith. She’s notably lively, yet unyielding about her professional aspirations – having earned her medical degree at an impressively young age of 19. Over time, Maggie becomes a housemate with Meredith and Amelia, often assisting Meredith in caring for her children.
Maggie has a significant connection with Jackson, but they eventually end their relationship. Afterward, Maggie marries Winston. In the end, Maggie chooses to relocate to Chicago to advance her profession.
Giacomo Gianniotti as Dr Andrew DeLuca
Growing up in Italy, I, Andrew, found myself joining the surgical team as an intern towards the end of season 11. By season 13, I had progressed to becoming a resident doctor. Throughout my medical journey, I’ve always tried to keep a strong moral compass. This trait proved crucial when I began to suspect that one of the patients, an aunt and niece, were actually involved in a human trafficking ring.
Instead, he passed away due to his wounds but came back in a dream sequence at Meredith’s beach in season 17.
Brooke Smith as Dr Erica Hahn
In the second and third seasons of the series, Erica made frequent appearances as a tenacious workaholic and long-standing adversary to Preston Burke. A skilled cardiothoracic surgeon, Erica later developed a romantic relationship with Callie. After being torn between her desire to expose Izzie following the Denny Duquette incident and Callie’s persuasion against it, Erica ultimately decided to resign from her position at the hospital and departed.
Richard Flood as Dr Cormac Hayes
Previously, Dr. Cormac worked as the pediatric surgeon chief at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. He had a brief romance with Meredith and is currently married to Abigail, who tragically lost her life to cancer. They share two teenage sons together.
Cormac was part of a severe car crash during which Owen confessed to administering lethal medications to dying soldiers. After sharing this regretful admission with Cormac, Owen asked him to disregard the near-death confession. However, Cormac was left pondering the consequences of maintaining the secret. Ultimately, he tendered his resignation and relocated with his sons to Ireland, thus preserving Owen’s confidentiality.
You can now stream all seasons of Grey’s Anatomy from 1 to 20 on Disney Plus. Subscribe to Disney Plus for just £7.99 a month or £79.90 a year to access these shows. Additionally, season 18 is available on Sky and NOW with new episodes premiering on Sky Witness in the UK.
