As a seasoned movie critic with a soft spot for heartfelt dramas that tackle real-life issues, I must say I was deeply moved by the British series “Butterfly.” Having spent years watching the evolution of LGBTQ+ representation on screen, it’s refreshing to see such an authentic portrayal of a transgender child’s journey. The acting is top-notch, especially from newcomer Callum Booth-Ford as Maxine, who carries the weight of the story with maturity beyond his years.
The ITV drama “Butterfly” is ready for renewal and will soon become available on Netflix starting from September 11th (Wednesday).
The story revolves around Maxine, a 11-year-old girl, whose parents hold differing opinions about what’s best for her future.
On one side, there’s her biological father (portrayed by Emmett J Scanlan), who is not in favor of her decision to transition.
On the other hand, Maxine’s mother, portrayed by Anna Friel, is a strong supporter who cares deeply about Maxine’s mental wellbeing, as well as her sister, famously known for her role in Doctor Who, Millie Gibson, who takes on a protective role.
Back in 2018, when this three-part series graced our screens, transgender activist and renowned journalist, Paris Lees, enthusiastically proclaimed it as “the most outstanding event for the trans community in recent years.” As a fellow movie aficionado, I couldn’t agree more.
