As a seasoned viewer of British television, I must say that Six Four boasts a remarkable ensemble cast, each member bringing their unique talents to the table. James Cosmo, with his illustrious career spanning decades, is a familiar face from Trainspotting to Game of Thrones. His character, Jim Mackie, mirrors the turmoil of many on-screen roles Cosmo has portrayed – a man grappling with the weight of the past and the unyielding mystery surrounding his daughter’s disappearance.
Starting tonight (October 1st), ITV1 will be airing a repeat of the crime thriller that premiered on ITV last year, titled Six Four.
If you haven’t seen the four-part thriller yet, you have a chance to catch it weekly as new episodes air, or you could stream the entire series on ITVX at once. It’s an ideal choice for some crime drama viewing during the autumn season, in our opinion.
The thrilling TV show is modeled after Hideo Yokoyama’s popular book with the same title, and it revolves around Chris (Kevin McKidd) and Michelle O’Neill (Vinette Robinson), who are tormented by their daughter’s mysterious disappearance. However, they must also confront an unsolved case of another missing teenage girl from years ago, which introduces a vast landscape of potential criminal activity.
McKidd is particularly recognized for his extended stint in Grey’s Anatomy, whereas Robinson has lately graced our screens in Boiling Point and The Gathering. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the upcoming series promises to showcase exceptional acting talents from both.
This play is filled with unexpected turns, and you’ll find yourself guessing where the story might lead next. What’s more, it boasts an ensemble of well-known actors as part of its cast.
With that, read on for everything you need to know about the cast of Six Four.

Kevin McKidd plays Chris O’Neill
Who exactly is Chris O’Neill? He is our complex detective constable who serves as the lead character in our series. At present, he grapples with the distressing disappearance of his own daughter and appears to also be experiencing a mid-life crisis. His enthusiasm for his job has begun to dwindle, but the mystery surrounding his daughter’s whereabouts only intensifies the strain on his relationship with Michelle. However, when faced with an old, unsolved case that he recognizes, his passion for his work starts to resurface. But will he be able to crack this case?
Have I encountered Kevin McKidd in any other shows or movies aside from his long-running role on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Owen Hunt? Here are some of the roles he has played that you might recognize him from: Tommy Mackenzie in Trainspotting, characters in Rome, Anna Karenina, Journeyman, and voice acting in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare video games.
Vinette Robinson plays Michelle O’Neill
As a cinephile, I can tell you that Michelle O’Neill is a tenacious woman who finds herself thrust back into the dark world she once worked to protect when her daughter goes missing. With her police training and network of contacts, she takes it upon herself to unravel the mystery, but the criminal underworld she left behind poses a formidable challenge. Amidst this harrowing search for her child, Michelle grapples with the rocky state of her relationship with Chris.
Have you recognized Vinette Robinson from any previous roles? She has gained significant recognition for her portrayal of Carly in Boiling Point, but she’s also well-known for her roles as Rosa Parks in Doctor Who, Sergeant Sally Donovan in Sherlock, and in the Black Mirror episode ‘Hated in the Nation’. Additionally, you might remember her from Waterloo Road and The Lazarus Project.
Andrew Whipp plays Philip O’Neill
What can be said about Philip O’Neill? He is Chris’s elder brother who holds a high-ranking position as an assistant chief constable. This puts him above Chris in the hierarchy, adding strain to their already tense sibling bond. Despite being close to the pinnacle of his career, he isn’t entirely satisfied with his current status, which has led him to carry a sense of resentment and feel the weight of expectations from all directions.
Have you come across Andrew Whipp in any of his previous roles? Some of the shows he’s been featured in include Outlander where he played Brian Fraser, Shetland as Danny Cairns, Death in Paradise, The White Princess, Cursed, Vera and The Mallorca Files.
James Cosmo plays Jim Mackie
Who is Jim Mackie? Jim, the father of Julie, the young woman who went missing in our town, is a key figure in the case that Chris is re-examining. Prior to his daughter’s disappearance, he was a lawyer and politician, demonstrating a high level of intelligence. However, her unsolved disappearance has had a devastating effect on his mental health, causing him to withdraw from much of society. In reference to his character in Six Four, Cosmo noted that “He has plunged into a dark abyss of depression, anxiety, and conspiracy theories, cutting himself off from most of the world.
Have you noticed James Cosmo in any other productions? This series brings him together with McKidd again, as they both acted in Trainspotting back in 1996. Throughout his prolific acting career, he has made significant appearances in Game of Thrones, Highlander, Braveheart, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, His Dark Materials, Jack Ryan, and even finished fourth on Celebrity Big Brother season 19.
Brian McCardie plays Bill Martin
Bill Martin is a police officer who interacts with Chris in their shared quest to find Jim Mackie. He was involved in the initial investigation of Julie Mackie’s disappearance and, as far as Jim is concerned, has been concealing the truth about that case. Could it be that Bill knows more than he’s revealing, and will he prevent Chris from uncovering all the secrets?
Have I encountered Brian McCardie in any previous productions?
Richard Coyle plays Robert Wallace
In the series, who does Robert Wallace represent? He’s a justice minister whose daughter gets abducted right before his anticipated political triumph. This situation bears resemblance to the Mackie case, suggesting that history may be on the verge of repeating itself.
Have I encountered Richard Coyle in any previous roles? Yes, he played the part of Jeff Murdock in the British sitcom Coupling by Steven Moffat, but he has also appeared in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Fall, and The Collection, as well as multiple stage productions.
Alex Ferns plays Gordon Byrne
Who is Gordon Byrne? He’s a different police officer involved in the investigation of Annabel Wallace’s disappearance, and he learns from university staff that she might have encountered someone “higher up” during the late-night hours.
Have you recognized Alex Ferns from any previous roles? He is particularly famous for his character Trevor Morgan in EastEnders, but he has also appeared in shows like Chernobyl (which earned him a BAFTA Scotland award), The Batman, Andor, and The Devil’s Hour.
Six Four is available to stream on ITVX.
