As a diehard movie buff, I’ve always admired the Amazing Spider-Man, but it seems like there’s a fresh talent in town challenging that title. The Ultimate Spider-Man has been stealing the limelight since Marvel revamped the Ultimate Universe. In this series, we see Peter Parker acquiring his Spidey powers while he’s already married to Mary Jane Watson and they have two kids, Richard and May Parker. What makes it even more intriguing is that these kids are in on their father’s secret life as a crime-fighting superhero – Spider-Man. However, when Peter goes missing alongside Harry Osborn (the Green Goblin), another hero steps into the shoes of the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Please be advised: The following content reveals spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #13. Proceed with caution!
Issue #13 of Ultimate Spider-Man features the collaboration of authors Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, Matthew Wilson, and VC’s Cory Petit. The majority of the comic revolves around Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and Green Goblin (Harry Osborn), who are held captive by Kraven the Hunter – a member of Kingpin’s Sinister Six. Meanwhile, in New York City, a figure dressed in black is seen patrolling the streets as Spider-Man, but this turns out to be none other than Peter Parker’s son, Richard Parker.
Peter Parker’s son is the new Ultimate Spider-Man
People walking along a bustling New York City street in January gaze upward to witness a figure dressed in black soaring through the skies, who turns out to be Spider-Man. Upon missing his rooftop landing, the mask of this acrobat known as Spider-Man peels off to unveil Richard beneath. This young Parker character is currently using the symbiote/tech suit that Tony Stark (or Iron Lad) bestowed upon him after he encountered the radioactive spider.
Richard and the symbiote have been teaming up to monitor the city, ensuring people don’t realize Spider-Man is absent. The symbiote praises Richard for his growth, always assuming the appearance of Peter Parker. It’s a bit unnerving, but Richard seems to be handling this strange predicament quite well. The suit subtly hints that if Peter were deceased, it could sense it due to their connection.
Although Peter Parker is absent, his son Richard is admirably stepping up as a temporary Spider-Man. You see, it was around Richard’s current age when Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider and had to figure out the Spider-Man role on the job. Moreover, unlike Peter, he didn’t have any supernatural assistance like a symbiote.
In typical Spider-Man fashion, we find a teenager grappling with the familiar concept that power brings with it a significant burden of responsibility. The essence of Spider-Man narratives is embedded in this dynamic. In issue #13 of Ultimate Spider-Man, Richard’s first arch-nemesis, the new Black Cat, has already been hinted at. Towards the end, Felicia Hardy emerges, seeking vengeance against Spider-Man for incapacitating her father, the original Black Cat. As we move forward into the next issue, we’ll witness their encounter and wonder if they’ll transition from adversaries to allies or perhaps even something more, like a romantic relationship.
As a die-hard comic book fan, I’ve always found the dynamic between Spider-Man and Black Cat intriguing – from sharing romantic moments to locking horns as adversaries. The twist here is that Black Cat remains unaware of the distinction between this Spider-Man and the one who wronged her father. Meanwhile, young Richard is oblivious to his own father’s secret identity as Spidey. Watching their eventual encounter promises to be a gripping spectacle, serving as another challenge for our new Ultimate Spider-Man to conquer.
