As a long-time admirer of the enchanting world of romantic comedies, I must say that Meg Ryan has truly captured my heart with her exceptional performances in these timeless classics. From the moment I first laid eyes on her as Annie in “Sleepless in Seattle,” I was swept off my feet by her charm and the magical connection she shared with the one and only Tom Hanks. However, it wasn’t until I watched Nora Ephron’s masterpiece, “You’ve Got Mail,” that I truly fell in love with Meg Ryan’s on-screen presence.
Meg Ryan is hearing the beat of her own heart.
In a heartwarming moment at the Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina on August 20th, I was humbled to receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award. This recognition came as a result of my efforts within the film industry. Surrounded by love and admiration, it was truly an unforgettable experience.
62-year-old woman, who was last seen on the red carpet in May for the 2024 Met Gala with designer Michael Kors, appeared cheerful as she greeted fans, wearing a knee-length gray dress, black Prada loafers, and sunglasses.
At the ceremony, finding myself among esteemed company – Alexander Payne, Elia Suleiman, and John Turturro – I couldn’t help but feel deeply moved when presented with the unique heart-shaped award. I was reminded of the film festival’s tumultuous history, having been founded in 1995 amidst the Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, a stark reminder of the challenges it has overcome.
Meg expressed her joy at being present to receive the award, saying, “It’s such a pleasure to be here, and I want to personally thank you for the inspiration you provided during the siege.”
The actress was deeply touched by the accounts of this community uniting, and their determination to watch movies, create music, dance, and sing despite facing danger.
She added, “I mean you proved that art and culture are the resistance.”
As a lifestyle aficionado, I’m here to tell you that your unique essence embodies the strength of diversity and the transformative power of creativity – anything that helps you conquer feelings of isolation. I want to express my deepest gratitude for sharing such a profound piece with me; in return, my heart is yours.
Over the past few years, I’ve chosen to stay out of the limelight, but that doesn’t mean my admiration for someone special has waned. In fact, I’ve been openly expressing my appreciation for my precious son, Jack Quaid, whom I share with my former spouse, Dennis Quaid.
Initially, it’s worth noting that Meg firmly rejects being labeled as a “nepotism kid,” a term often associated with celebrities’ offspring.
In an interview with Glamour last November, I shared my genuine admiration for Jack’s extraordinary talent. His natural ability far surpasses anything I could ever achieve. The term ‘nepo baby’ seems to overlook the hard work, inherent skills, and profound awareness he possesses regarding his privilege.
Jack has achieved significant success in his acting career, with roles in “The Hunger Games,” “The Boys,” and “Oppenheimer.” However, this wasn’t the career path she initially envisioned for him in the world of filmmaking.
She recollected watching him act in a middle school play adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. At that time, he was portraying Bottom. It was a period when she had recently parted ways with his father, and they were both seated on opposite sides of the gymnasium. With her face buried in her hands, she muttered to herself, ‘Oh, no. He’s talented. He’s incredibly talented.’ As I leaned forward, I noticed Dennis doing the same, with his head also buried in his hands. In that moment, I just knew.
Jack graciously accepted his mother’s praise, more recently replying after she defended him against accusations of being a “nepotism case”.
In an interview with The Daily Beast in July, Jack expressed that his initial impression was similar to a motherly figure taking care of her child. He further clarified that she was exhibiting the qualities of a nurturing and caring mother.
He went on to explain, “It seems to me she’s expressing the view that it diminishes my abilities.” However, he made it clear, “I don’t believe it lessens my talent. I understand that I put in a lot of effort, and I’ve faced ‘no’ far more often than ‘yes’.”
To take a look back at Meg’s storied career, keep reading for a ranking of all her rom-coms.
Regarding that 1997 film starring Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick as a duo seeking revenge by feigning romance to retaliate against ex-lovers, it unfortunately fails to impress, eliciting more of a ‘so-so’ or ‘meh’ response from viewers when it comes to Meg Ryan’s performance.
In an unexpected twist, the delightful 1994 romantic comedy seems to have slipped people’s minds, even though it features the talents of Walter Matthau portraying Albert Einstein and acting as a matchmaker between his character and Tim Robbins’ ordinary mechanic, with a shared bond similar to E = MC. (We hope this equation humor doesn’t cause confusion.)
In the 2023 film, the chemistry between director Ryan and David Duchonvy was noticeable, yet it lacked sufficient elements of romance and humor. However, it was intriguing to witness such a nuanced interpretation of a typical genre theme.
In this 2001 movie, titled “Kate & Leopold,” romantic comedy and time travel intertwine. Here, the character played by Ryan is paired with Hugh Jackman, who portrays a 19th-century duke unexpectedly transported to modern-day New York.
Ignoring the complexities of loopholes, illogical time travel, and an almost absurd conclusion, the film “Kate & Leopold” remains adorable and endearing. After all, why should one insist on scientific logic when there’s so much charm to enjoy!
The storyline was intricate, involving a woman traveling to France to confront her unfaithful fiancé, only to get embroiled in trouble when the shady character sitting next to her uses her as a pawn to transport a stolen necklace for opening a vineyard. However, Ryan and Kevin Kline, as the leading man, possessed an undefinable charm that made everything seem seamless.
It wasn’t until later that this 1990 film began gaining a devoted fanbase, despite initial indifference – perhaps because it featured her first collaboration with Tom Hanks, a topic I’ll delve into further. However, it served as a tantalizing appetizer for the blockbusters that were soon to follow.
In a heartwarming romantic comedy, I found myself captivated by a unique tale where the main characters, Annie (Ryan) and widowed father Sam (Hanks), only shared a single scene. Initially, I thought it wouldn’t work. But boy, was I proven wrong! The magical moment they met atop the Empire State Building in 1993, realizing their destined-for-each-other connection, left us all swooning. Admittedly, we might not yearn for love in our daily lives, but when it comes to this movie, we can’t help but wish to be swept off our feet by such a heartfelt romance.
Although it has a storybook quality like a fairy tale, “Sleepless in Seattle” doesn’t rank as the top film collaboration between the duo of Ryan and Hanks.
In “Sleepless in Seattle,” we got a glimpse of the chemistry between Ryan and Hanks; on the other hand, Nora Ephron’s 1988 adaptation of “The Shop Around the Corner” offers an indulgent six-course meal of escalating tension, clever dialogue, and a delightful balance of wit and sentimentality.
Sure, the technology and references may be outdated (LOL, remember AOL?), Ephron’s witty dialogue and its movie stars’ pure, well, movie star-ness have made You’ve Got Mail timeless.
Unfortunately, there’s another film we rate a bit higher on our list…
35 years on, I continue to cherish the timeless charm that this 1989 romantic comedy masterpiece holds, setting the bar high for all future rom-coms in the genre.
Initially unrecognized, Ryan captivates each scene she appears in as the fastidious and demanding Sally Albright, an achievement noteworthy when sharing the spotlight with comedy legend Billy Crystal. A single iconic simulated orgasm paved the way for her stardom, resulting in a Golden Globe nomination for her debut role that simultaneously launched and solidified her status as America’s beloved sweetheart.
Remarkably memorable phrase: “Baby fish-mouth” – one of many unforgettable moments, bolstered by outstanding performances from Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, makes it challenging not to adore the classic film When Harry Met Sally.
