As a cinephile with decades of film-viewing under my belt and a particular affection for the masterful work of Francis Ford Coppola, I must say that the first full trailer for Megalopolis has me thoroughly intrigued. The Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America seems like a unique blend of historical grandeur and contemporary relevance, a combination that Coppola has proven he can handle with deftness and finesse.
Renowned movie director Francis Ford Coppola, known for iconic films like The Godfather trilogy, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, Dracula, and more recently teased us with a trailer, has now unveiled the full Megalopolis trailer. This self-funded project, possibly his final film, boasts an impressive ensemble of talented actors.
Megalopolis is a modern-day Roman epic tale, set in an imaginative version of contemporary America. The city of New Rome finds itself in need of change, leading to discord between two main characters: Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a visionary artist striving for a utopian, idealistic future, and Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who clings to a traditional way of life that fuels greed, special interests, and political strife. Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, finds herself torn between her love for Cesar and loyalty to her father, ultimately leading her to question what she truly believes is best for humanity.
Megalopolis debuted for the first time on Thursday, 16th May 2024, competing at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. However, its UK release is scheduled for 27th September 2024.
