Meghan Markle prefers her salads alongside a meal.
Eventually, the Duchess of Sussex confessed that she had rebranded her lifestyle company from ‘American Riviera Orchard’ to ‘As Ever’, prior to its debut in February. She made this change because she perceived the original name as sounding more like a mixed phrase or jumble of words, rather than an appealing brand title.
On the April 22 episode of her ‘Confessions of a Female Founder with Meghan’ podcast, Meghan clarified, “I had proposed, ‘American Riviera’ as an all-encompassing term. However, I wanted to break it down further into subcategories, like ‘Orchard’, though quite diminutive. But the structure turned out to be a jumble of words that didn’t sit well with me. So, I decided to revert back to what I had always been passionate about.
She returned to rethink her brand’s title, fortunate that the former host of “With Love, Meghan” had already claimed ‘As Ever’ as a name by the year 2022.
She reminisced about the strategy, saying, “We decided to unveil the name I’d kept confidential. This allowed us to work undisturbed, with a clear focus, and construct something that was under the radar, so to speak.
Indeed, Meghan emphasized that rebranding her company privately was “really, really helpful.”
The 43-year-old, who faced challenges due to protests from companies with similar names and questions about the types of products she would offer, has openly discussed her shift in strategy after revealing her plans for the American Riveria Orchard back in March 2024.
She shared with People magazine last month, “The situation had many unexpected twists and turns, even regarding its name. I was discovering it as events unfolded.
In her journey through the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur, Meghan, a mother to Archie (age 5) and Lilibet (age 3), has been unable to contain her excitement about the assistance she’s encountered throughout this experience, shared with her spouse, Prince Harry (aged 40).
She went on to express her gratitude towards those who allowed her to stumble and learn from her errors. Additionally, she acknowledged the importance of being kind to herself throughout this process. In essence, she was saying that it’s all part of the journey of growth and self-discovery.
As for what inspired her brand’s initial name?
In her Instagram announcement of her brand back in February, she expressed, ‘The American Riviera seems like such an appealing title,’ was something I had pondered upon last year. It’s where I live, a place often referred to as Santa Barbara, but the label felt restrictive since it only encompasses items that are produced or cultivated within this region alone.
Previously known as The Tig, Meghan’s blog now bears a new name better reflecting her personal brand. She clarified this change in naming.
She went on to say that “As Ever” simply means ‘just as it has always been,’ and for those who have been with her since 2014 through The Tig, they would recognize that she has consistently enjoyed activities like cooking, crafting, and gardening – which are her passions.
I just can’t get enough of Meghan! Her lifestyle brand is incredible, but that’s not all she has going on. She’s also got a fantastic podcast and a Netflix series where she invites us into her home – it’s like having a personal tour with the actress herself! If you haven’t checked out With Love, Meghan, you’re in for some seriously sweet insights from this remarkable woman.
Meghan Markle, who’s known to enjoy a tasty jam, disclosed that her interest in preserving fruits deepened after she and Prince Harry settled into their Montecito, California residence. She mentioned this during the second episode of “With Love, Meghan,” while plucking berries, stating, “These vines were here when we moved in, which sparked my passion for jam and preserve-making.” Regarding her preferred preserve, that’s a topic she didn’t delve into in the excerpt provided.
The Duchess of Sussex shared that her grandmother used to make apple butter, which holds a sentimental value for her. She added that now her children, Archie and Lilibet, can connect this tradition with the comforting smell of slow-cooked fruit upon returning from school. Meghan also mentioned that Lili has even attempted preserve-making, with them making strawberry preserves together in one instance, where Lili eagerly participated in the process.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must say, Harry – affectionately known as H by his better half – isn’t just a charming presence on screen, but also a secret culinary whiz! In the fifth episode, Meghan delightfully disclosed that he whips up some truly delectable breakfasts.
Moreover, in the second episode, Meghan gave us a peek into Harry’s unique approach to seasoning his dishes. She shared that before tasting any meal, he always adds a dash of salt! In response, she admitted that she tries to keep her own hand on the salt shaker as light as possible.
Meghan expressed her fondness for a style known as “high-low,” where she combines costly and affordable items in her fashion choices. For instance, during the second episode when she hosted Mindy Kaling for a tea party, she revealed she wore trousers from Zara, a top from Loro Piana, and a sweater by Jenni Kayne.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can’t help but be captivated by the diverse passions showcased in the series. While it’s well-known that Meghan delights in hosting, cooking, gardening, and decorating, she also unveils some of her lesser-known interests.
For example, in one episode, she organizes a game night with her friends, where they all embark on a shared journey to master Mahjong. As she mentioned, “We’ve been learning Mahjong together over the past few months. It originated in China in the 1800s, and we play an adaptation called American Mahjong. What I’ve come to cherish about Mahjong isn’t just the game itself, but the experience of learning something new with friends, which ultimately serves as the backdrop for the growth of our friendships.”
In another episode, her friend, Vicky Tsai, founder of Tatcha, revealed Meghan’s fondness for pickleball. Moreover, the Duchess herself disclosed some of her preferred genres of music.
In the fifth installment, I proudly declared my undying affection for a plethora of ’70s soft rock, yacht rock, and soulful tunes. But then, there’s something extraordinary about French dinner party music that simply captivates me.
As for my taste buds, they have an incredibly resilient appetite for spice levels that would make others wince.
Though our resources were limited during my childhood, we still managed to explore various destinations because my mother was a travel agent. We sampled an array of tastes and cultures. My mom would often prepare gumbo – a dish rich in flavor and spice. This boldness in taste is something I’ve grown fond of, always seeking it out. So, I am introducing my family to these flavors that I love so much.
During episode two, Meghan reminisced about her childhood, saying it seemed like a different era. However, fast food and TV dinners were the norm back then, with quick-heat kids’ meals that had separate sections. She grew up on these, spending her time watching Jeopardy! and consuming a lot of fast food. At that time, her favorite fast food joints included Pollo Loco, Taco Bell (with extra hot sauce on the Mexican pizza), and Jack in the Box, as her mom particularly loved their tacos.
Yet, those weren’t the only memories she recounted from her childhood; Meghan additionally discussed her experiences with the Girl Scouts as well.
On the fourth episode, she mentioned that she had been a Girl Scout for quite some time. She began as a Daisy, which is when girls are around 5 or 6 years old. She also recalled selling many cookies during her tenure. Notably, her mother served as the leader of Troop 949.
Following their retirement from active royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan maintained the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In her book With Love, Meghan, she elaborated on why the Sussex title holds great significance for her.
“It’s quite amusing that you keep referring to me as Meghan Markle,” Meghan said to Mindy in episode two. “You see, I’m Sussex now. When parents talk about their children, they often say ‘I have kids.’ For me, it’s different. It means so much to declare, ‘This is our family name. Our little family name.’
Discussing Archie and Lili, Meghan shared some personal details about their lives in the series. For instance, she mentioned that both children enjoy gardening as much as she does, even having their own tools, and they take it quite seriously. She also highlighted her daughter’s affinity for the color pink and a clean-up song she created, aptly titled “Clean as you go.”
In episode five, Meghan said, “‘Clean as you go. Lili has made a song out of it,'” which is basically, ‘Keep your space tidy.’
Moreover, Meghan talked about preparing sun tea with Archie and the day he caught a trout while fishing. Additionally, she expressed her enjoyment of cooking with her children. As she put it in episode five, “‘It’s so much a part of what I want them to learn and have these great formative memories of being there with me.’ ‘Oh mama used to make this.'” This essentially means that she wants her kids to learn from the experiences they share in the kitchen and create lasting memories.
Before achieving fame as an actress and duchess, Meghan held her initial job at an ice cream parlor named Humphrey Yogart when she was 13 years old. Later, she also worked at a doughnut shop called Lil Orbits Donuts during her childhood, where they made miniature doughnuts for craft events. In college, she worked as a coat-check girl and cocktail waitress in Chicago, but had to return to being a coat-check girl due to some confusion with a customer’s martini order. Additionally, Meghan shared that she used to teach gift-wrapping classes during the early stages of her acting career.
In episode four, Meghan is seen hosting an event with Nacho Figueras’ wife, Delfina Blaquier. During their get-together, she shares thoughts about her time spent abroad. She admits that what drew her to Argentina was its resemblance to California, particularly the presence of mountains and the overall joy and enthusiasm for outdoor life. Despite being there only briefly, as an intern at the U.S. embassy, she fell in love with it.
From 2011 to 2018, Meghan starred as Rachel Zane on Suits, a role that she will always remember when she learned she would be relocating to Toronto for it.
In episode two, she remarked, “So it’s picked up here in Toronto, right? What does that mean?” Later on, if I understand correctly, this means one season in Toronto for the show. That’s fantastic! If there are two seasons, I wonder if my life will be relocated to this new location. Fortunately, I have a fondness for Canada, and I’ve always tried to bring the cast over or meet people from the dog park with their dogs. Interestingly, her co-star Abigail Spencer appears in one of the episodes of ‘With Love, Meghan’.
In January, it was shared that Meghan’s cherished beagle, Guy, had sadly passed away. This lovable dog appeared frequently in the Netflix series, and Meghan had often spoken about her affection for him.
“I would do anything for Guy, and he knows it,” she said in episode four. “He can have whatever he wants because he is whatever kind of guy you need him to be depending on the day—my sweet guy, my silly guy, my saucy little guy, always my spoiled guy.”
And he was always by her side.
“Guy’s just always there,” she added in episode five. “He’s my shadow, and he’s been with me for a very, very, very long time. Guy’s been with me since I lived in Toronto. He was found in the woods in Kentucky, and he’s since moved with me to the U.K., back to Canada, to California. So yeah, Guy has a lot of stories to tell.”
After the series ended, Meghan indicated that it was dedicated “in loving memory of Guy.
