As a mother myself, reading Meghan’s words resonates deeply with my own feelings and experiences. The decision to take time off work for those precious early months with our children is one that strikes at the heart of what it means to be a parent. It’s not just about nurturing a new life, but also about creating a strong bond that shapes us all.

Princess Lilibet is learning to hold court at a young age.

On a journey to Colombia alongside her spouse, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle disclosed that their youngest child, aged merely three, is in the process of discovering her own voice and expressing her thoughts and concerns.

Meghan expressed that she draws inspiration from the powerful women in her life, specifically mentioning her mother, Doria Ragland. During her speech at the Afro Women and Power event on August 18th, she emphasized that her approach to situations is often less about fighting and more about filling spaces with love, kindness, and generosity.

In her own words, The Duchess of Sussex (mother of five-year-old Archie, alongside the Duke of Sussex) stated, “It’s the experiences that drive me. I understand the powerlessness when you don’t express yourself at crucial moments. I urge our little one, who has already discovered her voice at three years old, to keep doing so – we are incredibly proud of her.”

Additionally, Meghan clarified that the Archewell Foundation, which she and Harry established in 2020, aims at empowering and supporting women and children.

At a young age, I was privileged to experience having my voice recognized, which isn’t always possible for many young women. As part of our work with Archewell and as parents, we aim to ensure that every girl feels heard, while also teaching boys to listen to girls. Men play a significant role in this, and my husband is a shining example of this commitment.

The 43-year-old also provided further insight into her and Harry’s dynamic.

“Indeed, we make an effective team,” she acknowledged. “Moreover, my husband serves as a strong example of men supporting women, enabling them to express their opinions. It’s crucial for this support to begin in childhood and continue throughout adulthood.”

Meghan’s remarks regarding her child are unusual since she and Harry typically prefer to maintain confidentiality about their family matters, sharing them sparingly.

Yet, it’s now made clear in their recent joint interview, marking three years since they last spoke together, that their offspring are the priority in all their decisions—a reason behind establishing the Parent Network within the Archewell Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping adults whose children have been affected by social media.

Meghan expressed to Jane Pauley on CBS Sunday Morning (August 1 preview clip) that our children are still young. She finds them incredible, but as parents, all one can think about is shielding them. With the state of online activities becoming evident and requiring significant improvement, they’re thrilled to contribute positively to the change.

He shared with Sky News in 2015 that he didn’t believe such things could be hurried. He explained that the event would occur when it was meant to. When asked about the birth of his niece Princess Charlotte making him consider settling down, he replied that although he yearned for children at that moment, there was a procedure one must go through first.

In the past, long before her own child was born, Meghan had already planned ahead and bought herself a Cartier French Tank watch. She shared with Hello! in 2015 that when she learned Suits was renewed for its third season, which seemed like a significant achievement at the time, she went ahead and treated herself to the two-tone version of this watch. The watch has an engraving on the back reading “To M.M. From M.M.”, and she intends to pass it on to her daughter someday.

Discussing fatherhood has always been a topic associated with Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana’s younger son, similar to marriage. In an interview with People magazine in May 2016, just prior to meeting his current partner, he expressed ambivalent feelings about becoming a father: “At times during life, particularly when we travel abroad, I feel a strong desire to have children now… But then there are instances where I retreat and think, ‘I don’t need kids!’ There’s no rush. At times, I have even been discouraged from having children.”

After welcoming my little one, Archie, in May 2019, I can’t help but express how extraordinary this journey has been, far surpassing any expectations I could have ever imagined. The strength and resilience shown by women throughout this process is truly beyond words, but Meghan and I are both overwhelmed with joy and deep gratitude for the love and support we’ve received from everyone. This incredible experience has been a blessing, so we wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who have shared in our joy.

Harry reflected on the lessons he’s learned since becoming a parent during a speech at the National Youth Mentoring Summit in 2019. He shared, “I’m struck by a few things today, most of which is the power of the invisible role model. The person who may be sitting here today that doesn’t realize that someone looks up to them that—for that person—you inspire them to be kinder, better, greater, more successful, more impactful. Perhaps it’s the newfound clarity I have as a father knowing that my son will always be watching what I do, mimicking my behavior, one day maybe even following in my footsteps.”

In his talk last year, Prince Harry expressed that our dear fellow is of utmost importance to us, but after that, our responsibilities follow as the second priority. We are simply striving to contribute in any way we can to help improve this world.

Harry and Meghan discovered a positive aspect during the coronavirus pandemic thanks to baby Archie. As Meghan expressed in October 2020, they are grateful for this time together to witness him grow, as they would have been traveling and working more if not for COVID-19. This means they wouldn’t have been around for many of those precious moments. Therefore, it has provided them with a lot of quality family time.

Harry remarked, “We witnessed all of Archie’s milestones – his initial steps, his first sprint, his first stumble, every one of them.”

In a letter dated October 2021, addressed to then-House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer, Meghan expressed her joy but also her feeling of being swamped upon the birth of her daughter, when the ongoing pandemic had disrupted usual operations in hospitals, schools, and other places.

She expressed that, similar to many parents, we were spared the difficult decision of either staying with our newborn during those early crucial months or returning to work. Instead, we had the option to bring our baby home and dedicate all our time and resources to our children and family during this significant period. This choice allowed us to avoid the daily dilemmas that many face regarding childcare, employment, and medical care.

As a lifestyle advocate, I’d like to emphasize that no family should find themselves in a predicament where they must make such difficult choices. No family deserves to weigh the necessity of earning an income against the essential responsibility of caring for their loved ones or themselves. A thorough and inclusive paid leave plan would alleviate this challenging dilemma, ensuring families can thrive without such sacrifices.

In April 2022, on TODAY, Harry expressed that combining his work-at-home schedule with parenting responsibilities was essentially impossible.

“Archie disrupts our Zoom meetings more frequently than anyone else does,” he mentioned. “Additionally, he tends to join in quite often, which is somewhat pleasant.”

Harry observed that his son was starting to exhibit a similar wit to his own. “I make sure to nurture that trait,” he said. “I believe it’s that spark of mischief that gives life its zest.”

Meghan admitted she was concerned for her—and everybody else’s—kids in the age of social media.

“Being a mother holds the greatest significance in my life, second only to being Harry’s wife,” she expressed during her October 2023 speech at the Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in the Digital Age, which was part of Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day.

She continued, “I should mention that I consider ourselves lucky because our kids are still quite young, which means we don’t have to deal with these changes immediately. However, I must admit I’m worried about the ongoing transformations, as they are something we’ll soon face.”

As a committed caregiver, I find myself reflecting on the saying, “The days stretch out, yet the years pass swiftly.” With this in mind, I echo the sentiment that we all navigate through the digital landscape of online life and social media. Above all, what unites us is the yearning for a secure environment.

During a trip to Lightway Academy in Abuja, Nigeria in May 2024, Meghan spoke to a group of kindergarteners about her daughter Lili. She explained that Lili is very small compared to everyone here, as she’s only turning 3 years old. A few weeks ago, Lili looked at Meghan and saw her own reflection in Meghan’s eyes, and she said, “Mama, I see myself in you.”

Meghan clarified, “She spoke quite literally at the moment.” However, her words resonated with me in an entirely new light. I pondered, “Indeed, I can recognize myself in you, and vice versa.”
