Meghan Markle Shares Why She Spoke Out About Her Suicidal Thoughts

As an ardent admirer of Meghan Markle, I find her courage and resilience truly inspiring. Her decision to share her personal struggles, particularly the dark moments during her pregnancy with Archie, speaks volumes about her character. It is evident that she is not just a Duchess, but a beacon of hope for countless individuals who have experienced similar pain and trauma.

Meghan Markle is giving insight into her decision to speak out.

As a committed follower, I’d like to express it this way: For the first time since publicly discussing my feelings of suicide during pregnancy with our son Archie, aged 5, in an impactful interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, I, the Duchess of Sussex, have shared the reason behind my decision to disclose my story.

In a conversation with Jane Pauley on CBS Sunday Morning (August 4), Meghan expressed that as we heal from any form of pain or hardship, one crucial step—a step I’ve taken myself—is being completely open about it. I haven’t shared all my experiences yet, but what I want to emphasize is that no one should ever feel the way I did, or plan things out like I did, or feel unheard.

As a parent myself, I can deeply empathize with Meghan and Harry after learning about their personal experience of losing loved ones to online abuse and misinformation. Having gone through similar situations, I understand their determination to help other families navigate the internet’s pitfalls. Their new initiative, The Parents Network, is a testament to their unwavering commitment to giving voice to parents who have faced similar heartaches. As proud parents of Archie and Lilibet, 3, they are passionately advocating for the safety and well-being of families online. I wholeheartedly support their efforts and hope that their foundation can make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless families facing the same challenges.

Furthermore, providing assistance sometimes means openly sharing personal hardships. Forty-three-year-old Meghan expressed her readiness to face criticism as long as her narrative serves as a beacon for even a single individual.

“Should sharing my experiences of overcoming challenges inspire or help others, by prompting them to truly care about their well-being rather than assuming everything’s fine based on appearance, then it’s worthwhile,” she emphasized. “I’m ready to endure any consequences for that.”

In my own journey, I confessed to Oprah that I faced challenges in disclosing my troubling thoughts to my partner, Harry, when first opening up about my personal struggles, much like the character I portrayed on Suits.

“In all honesty, and I felt deeply embarrassed then as well as confessing this to Harry later on, given his heart-wrenching losses, it was a confession I dreaded making. Yet, I couldn’t keep it bottled inside any longer. I feared for my own existence if I didn’t express it.” (Regarding the youngest son of the late Princess Diana)

For Harry, that moment signified a turning point when he resolved to safeguard his family, even if it meant sacrificing aspects of his royal life, such as his relationships with his father King Charles III, older brother Prince William, and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.

He clarified, “My main worry was a recurrence of past events, which I’ve expressed openly on multiple occasions. What I observed was a repetition of history, but potentially even worse – or certainly much more perilous, as it involves factors like race and social media.”
