Meghan Markle didn’t love the idea of transforming her home into a TV set.
The Duchess of Sussex chose not to shoot her Netflix series “With Love, Meghan,” which debuted in March and has already been renewed for another season, at her actual residence. Instead, she films in a house close by in Montecito, California, that belongs to her neighbors.
When someone asks, “Why didn’t you film here at your house?”, it’s almost like they don’t realize that my kids will be returning from their nap, and having 80 people in the kitchen isn’t the kind of early-life memory I’d want them to cherish. In fact, we were incredibly lucky to discover a suitable location nearby. [Meghan explained this at the Time100 Summit in New York on April 23.]
Meghan, mother of Archie (age 5) and Lilibet (age 3), alongside her husband Prince Harry, mentioned that although she generally avoids shooting scenes at home, having a team of 80 people around helps her maintain a conversational feel while filming with the audience.
She revealed that she didn’t prefer a traditional cooking show or a reality show format. Instead, she wanted a unique approach where it felt like we were having a conversation with her. To achieve this, she decided to talk directly to the crew who were present in the room with her.
Furthermore, as Meghan explained to TIME’s Jessica Sibley, she is thriving more than ever, expressing that the program and the creative aspects of it “spark my happiness” instead.
Meghan largely credits her joy to more than just her thriving career in television and business; she also acknowledges her loving spouse and kids as significant contributors to her happiness.
The Ever founder expressed, “I’ve never been this content before, for I am blessed with a loving husband who is incredibly supportive, and a partner in every sense. Additionally, our children are thriving, radiating happiness in the freedom and security of their lives that we provide. Among all my life experiences, reaching this point was beyond anything I could have envisioned.

Meghan Markle, who is well-known for her fondness for jams, shared that she became more involved in the process of making preserves after moving with Prince Harry into their residence in Montecito, California. She mentioned this during the second episode of ‘With Love, Meghan’, while plucking berries, saying, “These vines were here when we moved in. They inspired me to start creating my own jams and preserves.” When asked about her preferred preserve, she did not specify.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, mentioned that her children, Archie and Lilibet, are now involved in a tradition she cherishes from her childhood – making preserves, particularly apple butter. She added that this activity will remind them of arriving home from school and enjoying the aroma of slowly simmering fruit. She also shared an instance where Lili helped make strawberry preserve with her, taking active roles like picking berries and stirring the mixture.
In the fifth episode, Meghan casually mentioned that Harry, affectionately known as H, has quite the knack for cooking, particularly breakfast dishes. Furthermore, Meghan shared some details about how Prince Harry prefers his meals seasoned. It seems that before tasting any meal, he always adds a pinch of salt to it first. In response, Meghan attempts to reduce the amount of salt she uses when preparing meals for him.
Meghan Markle, the ex-star of Suits, expressed a liking for a style blend she calls “high-low”, where she combines costly and budget-friendly items in her wardrobe. During the episode where she hosted Mindy Kaling for a tea party, she detailed her ensemble, revealing she wore pants from Zara, a top from Loro Piana, and a sweater by Jenni Kayne.
In addition to highlighting Meghan’s passions for hosting, cooking, gardening, and decorating, the series delves into some lesser-known aspects of her interests.
For example, in one episode, she organizes a game night with her friends. She mentioned that they have recently taken up playing mahjong together. “Mahjong originated in China during the 1800s,” she explained. “We play the American version of it. What I’ve grown to appreciate about mahjong is not just the game itself, but the experience of learning something new with friends and watching friendships grow against the backdrop of a shared activity.”
In another episode, Meghan’s friend and Tatcha founder Vicky Tsai disclosed that Meghan enjoys playing pickleball. Moreover, Meghan herself revealed some genres of music she admires.
In episode five, Meghan shared that she enjoys an extensive playlist of ’70s soft rock, yacht rock, and soul music. Additionally, she mentioned a specific genre called French dinner party music.
As for her food preferences, she expressed a remarkably high tolerance level when it comes to spicy dishes.
From an early age, our resources were limited, but we still managed to explore various destinations,” she explained. “My mother was a travel agent, so we got to sample countless cuisines and visit numerous locations. My mom would often prepare gumbo – a dish rich in flavor and spice. I find myself constantly yearning for that level of zest. So, I am introducing my family to my taste preferences, and I have a particular fondness for spicy food.
In episode two, Meghan reminisced about her childhood, saying, “It seems like another world now, but back then it was completely normal for me to eat a lot of fast food and TV tray dinners. I remember those microwavable kids’ meals with separate sections…I grew up on that, while watching Jeopardy! and consuming plenty of fast food.” Her favorite fast-food picks at the time were Pollo Loco and Taco Bell, particularly their Mexican pizzas with extra hot sauce, as well as Jack in the Box because her mother enjoyed their tacos.
In addition, she didn’t just talk about those memories; Meghan reminisced about other moments from her childhood as well. She even mentioned her experiences with the Girl Scouts.
In the fourth episode, she mentioned that she had been a Girl Scout for quite some time. She joined as a Daisy, which is typically for girls aged 5 or 6, and she sold an impressive number of cookies. Her mother served as our troop leader – Troop 949.
Following their departure from active royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan retained their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In her book With Love, Meghan, she elaborated on why the Sussex title holds such significance for her.
“It’s amusing that you still refer to me as Meghan Markle,” Meghan said to Mindy in episode two. “You see, I am Sussex now. Just like parents name their children after themselves, I share my name with our family. I didn’t fully understand its importance before, but it means so much to say, ‘This is our family name.’
Discussing Archie and Lili, Meghan shared some fascinating glimpses into their lives through the series.
She revealed that both her kids, particularly Lili, have inherited her passion for gardening. They even possess their own tools, and as she put it, “They treat gardening with utmost seriousness.” Moreover, she mentioned that Lili has created a song from the habit of cleaning up as they go along, which she often sings, “‘Clean as you go. Clean, clean, clean, clean, clean as you go.'”
Meghan also spoke about making sun tea with Archie and one of his memorable experiences when he caught a trout while fishing. Additionally, she shared her fondness for cooking together with her children, stating that it’s an essential part of their bonding moments, “‘Oh mama used to make this.'” (in episode five)
Before becoming an actress and a duchess, Meghan had her initial job working at an ice cream shop called Humphrey Yogart when she was thirteen years old. Later on, she worked at a doughnut shop named Lil Orbits Donuts during her childhood, and in college, she held jobs as both a coat-check girl and a cocktail waitress at a bar in Chicago. Additionally, Meghan mentioned that she led gift-wrapping classes during the early stages of her acting career.
In the fourth episode, Meghan gathers with Nacho Figueras’ wife Delfina Blaquier, and she reminisces about her time spent abroad. She explains that what drew her to Argentina was its similarity to California, particularly the presence of mountains and a shared exuberance for life and appreciation for being outdoors. Although she was there for merely a few months as an intern at the U.S. embassy, she developed a strong affinity for it.
Meghan Markle portrayed Rachel Zane in the series ‘Suits’ from 2011 until 2018. She will always remember the moment she discovered she was relocating to Toronto for that part.
In episode two, she mentioned that the show will be filmed in Toronto. She asked, ‘What does that mean?’ It seems like they’ll spend at least one season in Toronto. That’s great! If it lasts for two seasons, I wonder if my life will now be based in this new location. Fortunately, I have a fondness for Canada, and I’ve always made an effort to bring the cast over or meet new people through our dogs at the dog park.”
In addition, her co-star Abigail Spencer is featured in one of the episodes from ‘With Love, Meghan’.
In January, I sadly shared the news that my cherished beagle, Guy, had passed away. This lovable canine graced our screens in various episodes and was a significant part of my life, as I had often spoken about my deep affection for him.
“I’d do anything for Guy,” I expressed in episode four, “and he knows it. He can have whatever he wants because he is the sweet, silly, saucy, spoiled guy I need him to be on different days.” Indeed, he was always by my side.
As I mentioned in episode five, “Guy’s just always there. He’s my shadow and has been with me for a very long time. From Toronto to the U.K., back to Canada, and then California, Guy has quite a tale to tell.”
Following the conclusion of our series, I dedicated it to the memory of Guy.
