Mel B’s daughter Phoenix Brown: ‘Nepo babies must admit we get opportunities faster than others’

Growing up with a mother who was part of the Spice Girls band, I’ve often been referred to as someone who has benefited from nepotism. However, I am striving to make a name for myself as a talented DJ and broadcaster. It wouldn’t be honest to say that having Mel B as my mom hasn’t given me some advantages along the way.

In contrast, there’s been a growing sense of discontent in recent times, often bordering on fixation on social media, as it seems an increasing number of offspring from well-known figures are gaining success in the entertainment world.

2022 was referred to by New York Magazine as the “year of the inherited fame offspring” or simply “the year of the nepo kid”, with notable examples like Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Kaia Gerber, child of Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford, and Dakota Johnson, who is the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.

Brooklyn Beckham, son of David and Victoria, has been dubbed the ‘ultimate nepo baby’.

The meaning of this term has become progressively associated with something harmful or poisonous. However, it’s essential to comprehend the reasons behind this association, and determine if the harm attributed is unjustified. Despite nepotism babies being exceptionally skilled at their craft – and many indeed are – they often encounter criticism that stems from a lack of understanding, envy, or animosity.

Indeed, the concept of nepotism in Hollywood isn’t a recent development; it has been around long before it gained popularity online. For example, consider Gwyneth Paltrow, the child of actress Blythe Danner, or Kate Hudson, who is Goldie Hawn’s daughter. They are prime examples of individuals who benefited from their family connections in the entertainment industry.

In my role as a movie critic, I’ve never encountered such intense animosity surrounding a topic quite like this one. As I delved into the creation of my documentary, “Born in the Limelight – Nepo Babies: UNTOLD,” I extended invitations to no less than 90 individuals often referred to as ‘nepo kids.’

What’s striking is that only one individual, my childhood friend Jack, son of Boyzone legend Ronan Keating, who faced criticism when he joined Love Island in 2022, was willing to share his perspective on camera with me. This, I believe, underscores the complexity and sensitivity of this heated debate.

In order to create this movie, I needed to step out of my comfort zone and brace myself for potential negative feedback – which was certainly nerve-wracking. It’s true that without my mother’s encouragement, I don’t believe anyone would be interested in listening to me at all.

Children of privilege should recognize that we’re often given opportunities more swiftly than many others. As my mother points out in the documentary, she was from a working-class background and had no one to pave her way. I wouldn’t have the life I have now if it weren’t for her tireless efforts in building her own career. It would be foolish not to appreciate that. Nevertheless, if I weren’t skilled at my job, I wouldn’t be able to keep it – I’d lose it.

Regarding the children of the wealthy and renowned, they’re often perceived as enjoying a privileged lifestyle with fancy homes and luxury cars. However, the reality is far more complex, as there are drawbacks. For instance, I personally experienced hostility simply because my family was under public scrutiny. It’s uncomfortable when your parents’ personal matters become tabloid fodder – or in my case, even topics of discussion among teachers.

In my movie, I devise an intriguing test to explore how much influence my name holds. I strive to kickstart my career as an artist by creating intentionally poor paintings filled with smiley faces. I arrange a grand debut exhibition, inviting journalists, celebrity attendees, art critics, and appraisers. Will my initial show be a triumph? Simultaneously, Betty, a skilled artist who’s finding it tough to sell her creations, replicates this approach, submitting numerous applications.

Shall we observe together to see who got the most responses and what transpired? Was it perhaps Betty, the groundbreaking artist who graduated from one of our nation’s top art schools, a trailblazer in her family, and whose work is nothing short of breathtaking, or could it be me?

Nepotism is prevalent across various fields of work, not just limited to one industry. While it may be more noticeable in entertainment due to its public nature, it’s essential to acknowledge that this issue exists and needs addressing. I don’t have all the solutions, but focusing on individual nepotistic practices won’t solve the problem. Instead, we should delve into broader societal issues, such as increasing income inequality, which might be contributing to the perception of nepotism as a symptom. Are nepotistic advantages being unfairly criticized when they are simply indicative of deeper social inequalities?

It’s time to end the hate and dig deeper.
