The eagerly anticipated sequel to Mel Gibson’s film The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of the Christ, is progressing and has now teamed up with a prominent studio – Lionsgate. On Thursday, Lionsgate officially announced their collaboration by unveiling a brief 20-second sneak peek of The Resurrection. The teaser merely displayed the title animation accompanied by music. Unlike Gibson’s 2004 film The Passion of the Christ which was an independent production by Icon Productions, largely funded by Gibson himself, this sequel benefits from a larger studio, providing more resources for its creation. However, with a larger platform, Gibson may encounter the same controversies as he did two decades ago, or even more intense ones.
According to Lionsgate CEO Adam Fogelson, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is widely anticipated as a groundbreaking cinematic experience for people worldwide in recent years. This film promises to be an awe-inspiring and grand spectacle that will leave audiences speechless. Mel, being one of our era’s greatest directors, has poured his heart into this project, making it not only a deeply personal endeavor but also an ideal platform to showcase his exceptional storytelling skills. I have worked with both Mel and Bruce for three decades, and I am excited to collaborate with them once more on this significant cinematic milestone.

For quite some time, Lionsgate’s bold, creative mindset and flexible, problem-solving approach have left a lasting impression on me. I couldn’t imagine a more fitting distributor for The Resurrection of the Christ, as expressed by Gibson in his statement. I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Adam and his team on several occasions in the past few years. I am well aware of their intellectual agility, enthusiasm, and drive, which they pour into every project. I have full faith that they will put all their efforts towards the successful release of this movie.
In its original release, The Passion of the Christ sparked significant controversy; while many viewers found it deeply religious, critics flagged instances and patterns of potential anti-Semitism within the movie. This discussion resurfaced two years later when Gibson expressed anti-Semitic views during his arrest for driving under the influence. Additionally, some critics argued that the film’s extreme violence crossed the line into “snuff film” territory, potentially overshadowing any emotional or spiritual impact it might have had.
For over a decade, Gibson has been discussing plans for a sequel, intending to bring back Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth. However, in recent years, Caviezel has stirred up much controversy, especially due to his vocal advocacy for the QAnon conspiracy theory. Despite this, no formal casting announcements have been made yet. It’s expected that The Resurrection of the Christ will start filming at the end of this summer.
