Memoir of a Snail – REVIEW

2025’s Best Animated Feature Film Oscar nomination has been given to “Memoir of a Snail,” a stop-motion film by writer-director Adam Elliot, who previously won an Oscar for his 2004 animated short film ‘Harvey Krumpet.’ The movie presents a grittier and darker perspective akin to Wallace & Gromit’s world. It begins with the death of Pinky, an elderly woman and Grace Pudel’s best friend, who is a solitary figure whose life has been marked by more downs than ups. Her early years were marred by being separated from her twin brother Gilbert by social services following their mother’s death in childbirth, followed by the passing of their paraplegic, alcoholic father when they were still young. While Gilbert was raised by religious fundamentalists on one side of Australia, Grace found herself under the care of swingers on the opposite side, making this a film that may require parents to shield their children’s eyes. The story is primarily narrated through Grace’s voiceover, often from the letters she writes to her brother.

Although the title may seem bleak at first, it symbolizes the emotional prisons in which Grace and Gilbert find themselves. Similar to a snail unable to move backward, they are yearning to break free from their past lives. The movie takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride, with moments that will make your heart ache and others that will make you laugh out loud. Despite their advanced age, the character Pinky remains lively, providing the necessary encouragement for Grace and Gilbert to shed their emotional shells and start anew.

The Memoir of a Snail stands out with its exceptional animations, much like top-tier movies. Layered in depth, it’s not only inspiring but also affirmative of life, making it an extraordinarily moving piece.
