Meredith Vieira’s Husband Richard Cohen Dead at 76 After MS Battle

Meredith Vieira and her family are mourning the loss of their patriarch.

On Christmas Eve, Richard Cohen, a longtime CBS News journalist and husband of Vieira, passed away at the age of 76 after battling multiple sclerosis for half a century, as reported in an article on Today published on January 7th.

Today, I found myself utterly shattered as Hoda Kotb announced the heartbreaking news of Kenny Chesney’s passing during their broadcast. She shared that he was surrounded by his cherished family and a sea of love when he left us. Savannah Guthrie, my beloved co-host, also touched upon Al Roker’s former colleague, Katie Couric, who graced our screens on Today until 2011.

The journalist, it seems, is in high spirits, according to her statement. She was not only radiantly beautiful but also deeply devoted to Richard. Their love for each other was evident, as Richard cherished Meredith deeply. Spending time with them felt like being around the most lively and engaging, unconventional, and trendy couple you could ever meet.

TopMob News has reached out to Vieira’s reps for additional comment.

At the age of 25, Cohen received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, as defined by the Mayo Clinic – a condition characterized by damage to the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers. This damage can lead to various symptoms such as numbness, weakness, difficulties in walking, changes in vision, and other related issues.

As Cohen previously shared, he opened up about his diagnosis to Vieira on their second date.

In a 2019 interview with Yahoo Life, I shared my personal health struggle, having learned from past experiences that openness is key. To my relief, she responded without missing a beat.

Vieira noted that she was not put off by it one bit.

She expressed her belief that life can be unpredictable, and tomorrow might bring an unexpected event such as an accident for anyone. However, this didn’t deter her from moving forward.

In the year 1986, Vieira and Cohen exchanged wedding vows. As a couple, they are blessed with three children: Benjamin (age 36), Gabriel (age 34), and Lily (age 32).

Apart from fighting Multiple Sclerosis, Cohen also faced two bouts of colon cancer – once in the year 1999 and again in 2000. Additionally, he was legally blind.

In 2019, Vieira spoke with People about living with her husband’s MS diagnosis over the years.

She shared with People that they both have the freedom to express their feelings, which is essential in their relationship. “He’s allowed to vent, given his chronic illness,” she explained, “and I am too, as there are times when I struggle with the restrictions it imposes on our family. We find relief in voicing our frustrations, but we don’t linger on them.
