As a woman who has navigated her way through the labyrinth of grief and anger, I am intrigued by the psychological thriller “Dead and Buried”. The narrative, revolving around a sister’s relentless pursuit of justice against a convicted killer, resonates deeply with my own experiences.

Colin Morgan from Merlin shared that his new venture, Dead and Buried, is a four-part psychological thriller focusing on a unique and unforeseeable dynamic: a bond formed between a convicted murderer and the sister of his victim.

20 years after Michael (played by Michael from Morgan) brutally murdered Cathy’s sibling, they unexpectedly cross paths again. This time, Michael has established a prosperous career and a strong family, despite his early release from prison. Meanwhile, Cathy has been grappling with grief all these years.

“Cathy, deeply affected by her past traumas, secretly engages in a relationship with someone she dislikes. This leads her to initiate a series of manipulative actions, including harassment and dishonesty.”

“Cathy’s fixation deepens, and her thoughts of retribution become more complex, merging with her day-to-day experiences. She embarks on a mission to disrupt Michael’s life using mental manipulation and covert tactics.”

Morgan continued by explaining that “Michael is unaware of the challenges ahead, nor equipped to deal with them should they arise.”

“The crowd will witness a man struggling to stay afloat as the water keeps getting progressively higher – and even more so,” he further explained.

But despite the weighty subject matter, there is plenty of dark humour scattered throughout Dead and Buried, which is both a Northern Irish “trait” and an approach its writer, Colin Bateman (Murphy’s Law, Doc Martin), is particularly well-versed in.

“Morgan noted that there’s a distinct characteristic among people from Northern Ireland, particularly those reminiscent of Colin Bateman, which involves coping with distress through humor, even when it leans towards the grim – the more intense the suffering, the stronger the impulse to alleviate it in any manner possible.”

It turns out that Michael, much like several other characters in Dead And Buried, rely on dark humor as a means of dealing with challenging situations.

He mentioned: “A psychologist might be able to explain the roots thoroughly; what I can say is that there seems to be a significant amount of it in Northern Ireland and in this series too. This not only increases its intriguing allure but also its authenticity.”

With Morgan, Scholey, and several other actors, the ensemble consists of Kerri Quinn (from Hope Street), Waj Ali (Carnival Row), Owen Roe (Vikings), Niamh Walsh (The Sandman), Micheal Hanna (He’ll Have to Go), and Joanne Crawford (Blue Lights).

Dead and Buried will be available to watch in full on BBC iPlayer on Monday 2nd September at 10pm and on BBC One NI at 10:40pm.
