Meryl Streep to Play Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter Remake?

Currently, the remake of the beloved “Harry Potter” series is in an interesting phase, as pre-production is ongoing but casting details are yet to be revealed, allowing plenty of room for speculation among fans, media, and franchise veterans. This week, the question arose for Jason Isaacs, who portrayed Lucius Malfoy from 2002 to 2011. With his current promotional activities for “The White Lotus” Season 3, he took a moment during an interview with Variety on Monday to address a “Harry Potter”-related question. When queried about who should succeed him as the Malfoy patriarch, Isaacs suggested Meryl Streep, stating that her talents are limitless and there’s no task she can’t accomplish.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but ponder if Isaac was, in part, playing coy with his comments. Meryl Streep, an acting titan, has this uncanny knack for fully embodying any role she takes on, a trait that’s almost become a running joke among fans over the years. It’s possible that he might have been subtly taking aim at J.K. Rowling, who’s made her views on gender identity quite clear.

However, it’s also evident that the creators are open to changes in this remake – the leading contender for Severus Snape is Paapa Essiedu, a Ghanian-British actor. So, why not add a twist to the Malfoy family’s ethnicity as well? It’s just an intriguing thought!

Isaac made it clear that he doesn’t have any suggestions for the actor stepping into Lucius’ role or any other part in this expansive series. He questioned why he should offer advice, as he knows some of the talented actors they are considering for casting. He believes the production will be outstanding and the last thing those brilliant actors need is guidance from an old-timer like him.

It’s quite improbable that Meryl Streep would agree to a decade-long TV role for the remake of Harry Potter, given her busy schedule. However, Isaac’s idea about recasting Lucius Malfoy as a woman is intriguing. It’s also questionable whether J.K. Rowling would approve of this casting choice, considering her longstanding criticism of transgender rights. Many Harry Potter actors have distanced themselves from Rowling due to these comments, but Isaac maintained a more neutral stance when he addressed the issue in 2022.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Isaacs stated that he didn’t want to delve into Jo Rowling’s trans issues as it’s a complex and delicate matter. However, it’s important to mention that she has generously donated a significant portion of her wealth to her charity Lumos, which greatly benefits countless vulnerable children worldwide. Despite some contentious comments she has made, I chose not to criticize her without first discussing the matter with her personally, which I haven’t been able to do yet.

J.K. Rowling’s stance against transgender rights has resulted in some fans choosing to boycott the entire Harry Potter series, and this could potentially present difficulties for actors joining the upcoming remake cast. The production of the new show is set to start filming in August 2023, with an anticipated release date on HBO and Max around 2026. Meanwhile, there are only two episodes left in Season 3 of The White Lotus, airing every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
