As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I’m excited to share my thoughts on the latest Elden Ring DLC boss: Messmer the Impaler. In the “Elden Ring” expansion called “Shadow of the Erdtree,” Messmer the Impaler emerges as a notable adversary, presenting a significant challenge to players.

In marketing materials such as trailers and posters, Messmer, who is Marika’s son, is portrayed as the primary antagonist. This demigod has dedicated himself to an endless battle in the Shadow Lands.

In the expansion pack, also known as the DLC, this individual is among the three necessary bosses that every Tarnished must defeat in order to complete the Shadow of the Erdtree.

Messmer the Impaler: where to find the boss

In the ominous Shadow Keep realm, Messmer the Impaler holds the position of the dominant foe. As the monarch overseeing this ominous citadel, Messmer can be found seated majestically on his throne in the castle’s lofty throne room.

Up at the Specimen Storehouse summit, there’s a foggy barrier nearby the Dark Chamber Site of Grace. Beyond this barrier lies Messmer’s location.

Messmer is under a malefic curse, which materializes in two aspects. The initial manifestation takes form as his ominous flames, unlike any other pyromancy encountered in the fundamental game. Given that fire is deemed unholy according to the Golden Order and the Erdtree, it’s logical that Messmer would be exiled to the Shadow Realms.

The serpents are his second affliction in the Golden Order’s belief system. In the fundamental game, these creatures are considered traitors. Players might recall Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, who formed an alliance with the God-Devouring Serpent to bring about the Erdtree’s destruction.

Given the circumstances, it’s no wonder Messmer was excluded from the Golden Order in the Lands Between.

Regrettably, his torchlight is essential for us to advance into the last stronghold. Consequently, a confrontation can’t be avoided.

Players need to be aware that Messmer plays a significant role in various NPC quests. Defeating him and utilizing his flame will prevent the progression of Ansbach and Freyja’s questlines. Simultaneously, your engagement with Hornsent will alter based on your approach to this battle.

Boss fight tips and strategies

Messmer truly embodies the moniker of “The Impaler.” Among all his moves, none pose a greater threat than his grasping attack. With a menacing wind-up, he charges forward, striking with his right hand.

As a gamer, when Messmer’s attack lands on me, I can expect to be in for a rough time. He’ll seize me first, followed by a swift and painful spear stab. To make matters worse, he’ll then engulf me in a burst of flames. This brutal combo usually translates to my demise, as the damage inflicted is significant.

It’s clearly evident that this character favors a combative approach with such moves. Consequently, gamers need to fortify their defensive strategies. Prioritize physical damage resilience, particularly against piercing attacks, and fire resistance for optimal protection.

For offense, use Slash, Holy or Frost damage. Obviously, Fire’s not a great elemental choice.

In this battle, players have the option to utilize any of the three summon types. They can call upon their Spirit Ash or bring in a cooperative companion. Within the arena’s boundaries, there exists the possibility of summoning Hornsent.

Since Hornsent’s summon sign is situated within the arena, it follows that Messmer will forgo the benefit of HP boosts from summoning allies exterior to the arena.

Additionally, it’s wise to remain agile or carry a robust fire-resistant barrier, as Messmer is known for his swiftness and extensive, reaching attacks. These complex combinations will force you to either skillfully evade them or endure their impact.

When his health is diminished to half, he will enter Phase 2. In this phase, his attacks become significantly faster and more mobile. He utilizes the Base Serpent as a weapon. To avoid his long-reaching gap-closers that cover the entire arena, it would be advisable for you to remain close to the Impaler.

If you manage to defeat Messmer, you’ll be rewarded with an impressive sum of 400 thousand runes, along with his distinctive Remembrance and the valuable Messmer’s Kindling key item.
