Met Gala 2025: You Won’t Believe the Jaw-Dropping Black Style at This Year’s Exhibit

It’s your turn to walk up the Met steps. 

At the beginning of May 5th, 2025, the Met Gala commences at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Even if your invitation might have been misplaced, don’t worry! There’s still much to savor from a distance. The event will be graced by its co-chairs – Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, along with an illustrious gathering of guests. But don’t forget that there’s just as much excitement to experience remotely!

From May 10 to October 26, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” a companion exhibit for the Met Gala, will be shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This exhibition, influenced by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” showcases not only fashion trends popularized by African American men but also distinctive clothing items worn by figures like Prince and members of the Black Panther Party.

And there’s a lot to take in throughout the exhibit.

Essentially, the arrangement of the display breaks down into 12 distinct areas that encapsulate the essence of being a “dandy.” These areas cover various aspects such as their personal style (Ownership, Presence, Distinction), hidden characteristics (Disguise, Freedom), achievements (Champion, Respectability), heritage and origins (Heritage), aesthetics (Beauty, Cool), international appeal (Cosmopolitanism), and practicality in clothing (Jook, meaning room for movement and activity).

The exhibit also showcases various two-dimensional artworks alongside the displayed clothing. These works, such as paintings and photographs by artists like Torkwase Dyson, Tanda Francis, André Grenard Matswa, and Tyler Mitchell, honor dandyism from the 18th century up to the present.

Later on, Chef Kwame Onwuachi will oversee dinner preparations, as suggested by Vogue. However, Anna retains the ultimate decision-making power regarding specific menu items.

2025’s Met Gala theme draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book titled “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Expression of Black Diasporic Identity”.

This year’s party will feature an exhibition that will be displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, starting on May 10 and running until October 26.

According to Vogue, the Superfine exhibit is divided into 12 distinct areas that embody the essence of dandy fashion, such as Ownership, Aura, Uniqueness, Masquerade, Liberty, Advocate, Lineage, Attractiveness, Casualness, Globalism, and “Jook,” a term referring to clothing designed for comfort and flexibility during movement and activity.

Apart from his renowned music career, the late Prince (who passed away in 2016) also bequeathed a timeless collection of clothing characterized by distinctive patterns, vibrant hues, and unique shapes.

This way, the sentence is easier to read while maintaining its original meaning and context.

The jockey’s uniform showcased in the exhibition might be one of the oldest American-origin sets still extant, and it’s plausible that it was once worn by riders who were enslaved, approximately between the years 1830 and 1850.

The display illustrates the significant impact that fashion had on the Civil Rights Movement, notably through the Black Panthers’ distinctive berets.

The Superfine theme is the first Met Gala since 2003 for focus exclusively on menswear. 

Dandyism” refers to an almost obsessive focus on fashion and style, particularly evident in the intricate designs of formal male attire.

Miller, who played a significant role in both arranging the exhibit and establishing its central idea, shared with Vogue that each garment displayed serves to “depict the journey of Black people, transitioning from being enslaved and portrayed as luxury goods, bought much like other symbols of wealth and prestige, to self-expressive individuals who set global fashion trends.
